Michalina “Emily” Mardell

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Baba, Michalina “Emily” Mardell. She left us on August 29, 2021 at the age of 85. She was born to Steve and Mary Kosik on September 14, 1935 in Kalyna, Sask. She was from a large family of six girls, three boys, and two siblings that passed away in infancy.
On June 23, 1957, Emily married her love of her life, John and together they began their journey. They moved to Waskesiu where they lived and worked for the first 10 years of their life. They eventually moved back to the Kalyna District and purchased some farmland. This is the place where they raised their 4 children.
Mom was a hard-working strong-willed Polish woman with a fiery spirit as the staff at Mt St Joe’s can attest too. Mom spent countless hours keeping the farm operating while dad worked at the pulp mill. She was very proud of her garden and yard. She had quite a green thumb and even right up to the end, she had her fingers in the dirt. If she was not in the garden or on the farm taking care of the animals, she was painting the house inside and out. In her later years, she attended painting classes at the home and became quite an artist. She spend hours painting pictures that we will treasure forever.
Once Mom and Dad moved into Prince Albert in 2000, they started a new chapter of their lives. Often times you would find Mom and Dad watching a Blue Jay game or Jerry Springer show together. Mom enjoyed making cabbage rolls and perogies, baking bread, making doughnuts and just generally making sure, everyone had a full belly.
Dad passed away in 2010 and three years later in 2013, Mom moved into Mont St Joseph Home where she lived until her passing. Everyone knew Mom as “Baba”. She left a lasting impression to all those who knew her and she will be deeply missed.
Emily is survived by her son Harvey (friend Teresa) and their children Dallas, Taylor (Evona), and Regan; her son Henry and his children Dawn (Jason), Ashley, and Larissa (Chris); her daughter Lori (Roger); her daughter Bev (Chris) and their children Brianne, Amanda, Mitchell, Nick and Jocelyn; six great-grandchildren Abbigail, Bennett, Maisie, Jaxon, Jordyn and Gillian; two sisters Josephine and Pauline (Jake); and her sister-in-law Alice.
She is predeceased by her husband John; her parents Steve and Mary; sisters Helen, Sophie, and Anne; brothers Frank, Pete, and John; brothers-in-law Tony, Casey, Pete, and Mike; and sister-in-law Susan.
We would like to express our deepest thanks to all the staff at Mont St Joseph’s for welcoming Mom and caring for her over the years. Mom developed some special relationships with the staff on Country Gardens that were very dear to her heart, and we will never forget the compassion and kindness you shown Mom during her final days.
Memorial donations may be made in Emily’s honor to Mont St Joseph Foundation, 777 28 Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 8C2 or MS Society of Canada, 2-706 Duchess Street, Saskatoon, SK S7K 0R3.
