Michael “Micky” Roger McKenzie was born on May 28, 1948, in The Pas, MB, to Hilliard and Marie Louis McKenzie, He was the eldest child of 14 siblings.
His younger years were spent on the trapline where he learned the skills of hunting, trapping, and fishing. He shared many stories of how his grandparents and uncles taught him the traditional knowledge and skills.
On August 10, 1968, he married Evelyn McKenzie (nee Fiddler), and to this union were born Eugene, Sean and Debbie.
Micky enjoyed the outdoor life and from that evolved the passion for competitive Dog Sled Racing. Following the footsteps of his father and uncles, he became an avid competitor, finishing first and crowned the 1974 World Champion at The Pas, MB, Trappers Festival.
From a young age he began his work life, leaving Cumberland House to make a living. Up until his sickness, without retirement on his mind, he worked tirelessly as an employee with N.R.T. serving the mines in Northern Saskatchewan. Previous to that he was employed with Sask. Highway, Midwest Drilling, and other job experiences in Alberta and Manitoba
Micky had many pastimes, enjoyed watching sports and especially golf. He spent his summers out on the courses with family and friends. He was always proud of his many golf moments, out-putting his bros, cousins, and friends (Super Seniors). He won a few titles in golf tournaments, including Seniors and the Northern Open.
Micky will be lovingly remembered and respected by all who knew him, family, friends and colleagues.
He leaves behind his mother, Marie Louise; his siblings, Zelia, Janet (Joe), Howard, Ernest (Denise), Elaine (Jack), Glen, Lionel, Veronica (Gerald), Pat (Rosalie), Corey, Durwin (Jin); his children, Eugene (Leona), Sean (Diane), Fred (Tanya), Jackie (Blair), Dwayne (Adelaide), Darren “Rupus” (Raquel), Kalvin (Glenda), Jonathan (Mika), Beverly Dawn, Darryn; his uncles, Leonard, McKenzie, Donald McKay; his aunties, Elise Sayese, Josephine Carriere; numerous grandchildren, chapans, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, Hilliard McKenzie; his daughter, Debbie; his sisters, Debbie Ann and “Chee Chee;” grandparents, uncles, aunties, cousins, and friends.
The Wake Services for Micky will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at the Parkland Hall, in Prince Albert, SK; continued on Monday, March 14, 2022 and Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at the Cumberland House Veterans Hall, in Cumberland House, SK. The Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, in Cumberland House, SK, with Father Jim Fiori officiating.
