It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Gerald Poulin. Following a courageous but incredibly difficult battle with cancer, Michael passed away on June 14, 2026, at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, SK.
Michael was born in Prince Albert, SK on August 24, 1980. He grew up between family members but mostly remembered his home to be on the family farm with his grandparents, Ernest and Simone Poulin, his father Gerald and his brother Justin. During his teen and early adult years Michael moved away from Prince Albert living in various places including Vancouver, Red Deer and Saskatoon; eventually finding his way back to Prince Albert after meeting his life-long companion and wife, Alexis Billay, in 2004.
As a young adult, Michael pursued employment through various avenues, working in different capacities until he found his career path in 2009 when he began working with Correctional Service Canada (CSC) where he was employed up until his death. During his years with CSC, Michael met numerous lifetime friends, a brotherhood he would call it. Michael’s work family/friends offered support and assistance without hesitation, truly being there for him and his family during times of need.
Michael and Alexis lived in Prince Albert during the first few years of their relationship. Following their marriage in 2009, they began making plans to build a home for themselves and their future children. After the birth of their first child, Mia Nicole, in 2014, this plan was put in place making this dream come true. Michael and Alexis built and moved onto their acreage in the Garden River area in November of 2015. Two more children were welcomed into the family, Kayson Michael, in 2018 and Cru Alexander, in 2023 completing their family unit.
Michael worked tirelessly to build this family oasis, and this is where he further embraced his love of the outdoors. He instilled this same love in his children, often taking them along to cut a trail or explore what nature had to offer. Following Michael’s cancer diagnosis, he was unable to continue doing many of these things he enjoyed but he continued to find joy in being in the place that he loved. When asked what he wanted to do with his time left, his answer was always the same, I want to be here, this is my home, this is my happy place. And so, he stayed, up until a few days before his passing.
Michael had a deep love of all things outdoors and if he could do it outside, he would. He loved to fish, hunt, camp, boat, quad and snowmobile. There was always a season for something outside. Michael found solace in the outdoors and whether it was time spent with family, friends or on his own, the great outdoors was where he could be found.
On April 26, 2024, Michael was diagnosed with stage 4 Clear Cell, Renal Cell Carcinoma which forever changed the path of his life. This devastating diagnosis left him unable to work or provide for his family in the ways that he was used to and forced him to rely on others to provide care and support which was incredibly difficult for him given his strong and independent nature. Despite the devastating diagnosis and quick decline in his ability to do the things he loved he always remained optimistic and hopeful that he would continue to live his life fully surrounded by family and friends, in the place that he called home.
Although challenging for Michael, he leaned in on those around him which allowed his family to remain on the acreage. From family to friends, coworkers, neighbors, and community supports, every aspect of support and assistance was appreciated.
Michael will be forever remembered by all of those who celebrated and shared in his life. Although his later years brought him more solitude, he continued to be deeply connected and forever grateful to those who chose to walk alongside him. If he was ever asked, how can I help, what can I do, his reply would be “bring me a coffee and let’s go for a smoke”. He enjoyed the simple moments, taking pleasure in catching up on old and new things happening around him.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Alexis Billay of 17 years; and children, Mia, Kayson and Cru. His children were truly his pride and joy in life. He is also remembered by his brother, Justin (Mel) Poulin, and their children; his parents-in-law, Larry and Elaine Billay; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and close friends. He will be deeply missed, loved and thought of often by all who knew him.
Michael was predeceased by his father, Gerald Poulin; grandparents, Ernest and Simone Poulin and Glen and Joan Hewison; his uncle, Paul Poulin; and cousin, Mitchell Poulin.
The family would like to share their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude towards the Palliative Care team at Prince Albert Home Care and to Dr. Alanna Surkan for their unwavering support during Michael’s battle with cancer.
