Melvin Klassen
January 25, 1936 ~ March 28, 2020
In loving memory of Melvin (Mel) Glen Klassen, born January 25, 1936 to John and Helen Klassen of Rabbit Lake, SK. Glen passed away on March 28, 2020 at Herb Bassett Home in Prince Albert, SK.
Mel grew up and attended school at Rabbit Lake, SK. He went to Alberta to work, spending ten years working at the pulp and paper mill in Hinton. On April 16, 1960, Mel met and married Lorna (Severson). They were blessed with two children, Diana and Don. In 1968 he moved his family to Prince Albert, where he worked at the pulp and paper mill for 26 years. In 1972 he was promoted to shift superintendent, a position held until his retirement in 1994.
Mel and Lorna spent many winters being snowbirds in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Mel enjoyed golfing summer and winter. A highlight for him was being able to golf on his birthday. He had a hole-in-one at Cooke Golf Course in Prince Albert, putting a smile on his face. He spent many hours playing his guitar and singing at jams in Texas and entertaining in seniors’ homes around Prince Albert, which was enjoyment to him. Family reunions were very important to him. To have family members together visiting, camping, fishing, and golfing, and having a good time.
Melvin is survived by his best friend and devoted wife of 59 years, Lorna; his children Diana (Garry Headrick) and Donald (Karen) Klassen; his grandchildren Kristal (Justin) Basaraba, Kimberly (Ryan) Louden, Daniel Headrick, and Shelbi Headrick; his great-grandchildren Jalynn, Tayva, and Ryker Basaraba; his brother Lorne Klassen, who passed 6 days after Mel; his sister Phyllis Maloney; his brothers Bruce (Jackie) Klassen and Wayne (Sandra) Klassen; his sisters-in-law Edith Klassen, Gail Klassen, Doris Severson, and Nellie (Morley) McArthur; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents John and Helen Klassen; his brother Leslie Klassen; brothers-in-law Stanley Maloney and James Severson; and his nephews Larry Klassen and Norman Maloney.
Mel passed in Herb Bassett Home where he received loving and compassionate care. His passing leaves a tremendous void in our lives, but we will carry on. Bless his memory.
