May Irene Halliday
(October 16, 1925 – August 28, 2011)
HALLIDAY- May Irene, late of Canwood, SK, passed away August 28, 2011 in Canwood, SK at the age of 85 years.
May Irene was born to Gordon and Anne Herdman on a farm outside of Debden, SK on October 16, 1925. She and her six siblings grew up on the farm until the family moved in to Big River. It was there where she met Bob and on July 7, 1945 they were married. In 1947 May and Bob moved to Canwood where Bob was a grain buyer for the Searle Grain Company. Later May went into Saskatoon and took a hairdressing course so that she could do hair in her own home and still look after her only daughter, Leah.
May and Bob enjoyed many sports. In the early years it was ball in the summer and hockey in the winter. In 1975 they bought Raider season tickets and came in to as many games as possible. May was a very generous person. If ever there was someone in need May would be there to help them out. If there was ever a shower being held in town there was always a gift there from her. She donated to every organization that asked and for every funeral in town. She was very thoughtful and caring of anyone in need.
She was very proud of her grandchildren, Matthew and Mitchell and loved them dearly. She enjoyed being with them especially during the summer while spending time at her little cabin at Waskesiu Lake. When the boys golfed in the Junior Lobstick it didn’t matter how early they teed off she wanted to be there to watch.
In 2004 May sold her house and moved into Northcote Manor in Prince Albert. She resided there until 2010 when she moved back “home” to Whispering Pine Place in Canwood. She was happy to be back where she belonged. Mom endured several medical issues in the year and half that she was there. On Sunday August 28, 2011 she gave up her battle against cancer.
May is survived by her only daughter: Leah and her husband, Wayne Mesenchuk and their two sons, Matthew and Mitchell; Her sisters: Louise McBride of Cranbrook, BC and Aileen Daley of Big River and brother: Fred (June) Herdman of Prince George, BC; her sisters-in-law Irene Halliday of Saskatoon and Dorthy Herdman of Ontario; one brother- in- law: Walter Brady of Tisdale and several nieces and nephews. Members of the Mildred Tuttroen family who were also part of her extended family, and many friends too numerous to mention.
May was predeceased by her husband Bob in 1994; her sisters Phyllis Brady and Mildred Howard; and her brother Doug Herdman, as well as several sisters and brother-in-laws; her very good friend Mildred Tuttroen and her son Bob.
There will be a graveside service at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens on Wednesday August 31,2011 at 12:00 noon, followed by a Memorial Lunch at the Zion Lutheran Church in Canwood at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Whispering Pine Place Activities or the Canwood Skating Rink.
