Maurice Peter Sorokan passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon at the age of 85. Maurice will be lovingly remembered by his family, son Greg (Susan), daughter Joanne (Andrew) Kasowski, grandchildren Cole and Jenna Sorokan, brother John, sisters-in- law Adele Sorokan, Irene Woloschuk and Catherine Woloschuk, as well as aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Maurice was predeceased by his wife Anne in 1993, parents Peter and Annie (Werezak) Sorokan, brother Paul, sister-in-law, Dorothy. He was also predeceased by Anne’s brothers and sister, Metro (Annie), Peter (Mary), Norman Woloschuk, and Mary Woloschuk.
Maurice was born on July 26, 1926 in Wakaw, SK. He attended Poltava School and completed his high school at Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon while residing at Mohyla Institute. He attended Teacher’s College and began his teaching career in Peesane, SK, followed by St. Julien and later Warman. Maurice returned to Saskatoon and completed his B.A and B.Ed. degrees from the University of Saskatchewan. He met his wife Anne (Woloschuk) while residing at Mohyla Institute. They were married in 1953 in Saskatoon. In 1958 Maurice and Anne moved to Prince Albert where he accepted a teaching position at Prince Albert Collegiate Institute (PACI). Maurice completed his teaching career at Carlton Comprehensive High School where he taught Physics and was the head of the science department. His teaching experience gave him an opportunity to teach physics at the University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in the summer of 1973.
Maurice was very active in the Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation. For several years he served as a councillor and was on the provincial executive. For his involvement in the Federation he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership.
Maurice was committed to his family and his community. He gave generously of his time and energy to many organizations. In Prince Albert he was the president of the Credit Union, chairman of the public school board, served on the Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Kinsmen Club.
Maurice had a love of his Ukrainian roots – both culturally and religiously. He served on the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church executive in Prince Albert for many years, was on the Green Grove Camp executive, chairman of the Mohyla Institute board, member of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada board, member of All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Saskatoon. He was also a member of TYC in both Prince Albert and Saskatoon and a member of Sts. Boris & Hlib (Bratstvo).
Maurice lived a full life and pursued many hobbies including travel, photography, curling, reading, fishing and golfing. His passion for travel took him to every continent. He loved to reminisce about his many trips with his wife and family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Maurice moved back to Saskatoon in 1999. Maurice will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. We are thankful for the many cherished moments we all had with him.

A Prayer Service for Maurice will be held on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 7:00 pm and the Funeral Service on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 10:00 am. Both services will be held at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of All Saints, (2616 Louise St.) officiated by Rev. Fr. Roman Kocur. Interment to follow in the Garden of the Last Supper, Prince Albert Memorial Gardens, Prince Albert, SK at 3:00 p.m.
