Maureen (Hobbins) Ness was born on Nov 7, 1932, in Meadow Lake, SK, to Maurice and Alice (Wells) Hobbins. She had 12 siblings. Sadly, 3 siblings died very young before she was born. Mom loved to go visit her brothers and sisters and I’m sure they are all happy to finally be reunited. Mom worked in a dental office in Prince Albert in her younger years. I remember her telling me that when she rode the train from Meadow Lake to Prince Albert, she remembers riding past Canwood. Mom said she wondered why anyone would ever live in such a small town. And when we drove over the viaduct in PA, she would tell me she walked over it every day to get to work at the dental office.
Mom completed Beauty Culture at Marvel in Saskatoon in 1965. She met her husband Lloyd in the mid-’60s and they moved to a farm outside of Plato in 1968. They had one daughter Lori in 1969. We farmed there until 1979. Mom had her hair shop set up in the house and did hair as well as being a busy farm wife and mother. We then moved to Canwood to continue farming. We lived in town for a few years until Mom and Dad renovated an old farmhouse on the land they farmed. Mom was still doing hair and made many lifelong friends because of it.
Mom always had a beautiful yard with a big garden and a cold room full of canning to show for it. She was a wonderful cook and I have never been able to duplicate her stuffing. Over the years, many of her nieces and nephews and step-grandsons spent summers with us on the farm. She loved having friends and family around, there were many special occasions celebrated at our place.
Maureen moved into Canwood in 2002 after her husband Lloyd went into long term care. She was on the Legion Auxiliary and happy to do her part in any way she could. Mom volunteered at Whispering Pine Place for many years, making lefse, helping with fundraisers, and anything else they needed. She joined the Lutheran church and went faithfully while her health would allow.
Sadly, Mom had a stroke in June of 2017 and moved into Long Term Care. She passed away peacefully on October 16, 2020, at Whispering Pine Place in Canwood, with her daughter and beloved grandson Matthew by her side.
Maureen is lovingly survived by her daughter Lori Wolfe (Garry Patterson) of Canwood, SK; her grandson Matthew Wolfe of Prince Albert, SK; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends. Maureen is predeceased by her parents, Alice and Maurice Hobbins; her husband Lloyd Ness in 2006; her siblings, Vincent, Cora, Bryden, Marie, Margurite, Loretta, Leonard, Lyla, and Fred.
With Covid 19 restrictions in place, there will be a Private Family Graveside Service held for Maureen in the Canwood North Cemetery. Following the service, there will be a link posted here for family and friends to watch Maureen’s Graveside Service that were unable to attend.
