Mary Zbaraschuk
1923 ~ 2024
It is in love and gratitude for her life of 100 years that the family of Mary Zbaraschuk announce her passing on February 25, 2024. Mary was born March 25, 1923, in the Honeymoon District to Samuel and Johanna Karpish on the homestead. She was the oldest of 8 children (4 sisters and 3 brothers) which she helped her mother raise. Life on the farm as a youngster was full of adventure and hard work to make something out of a quarter of brushland, into cropland.
On October 30th, 1941, mom married Frank Zbaraschuk, together they raised their family and worked the Zbaraschuk homestead for 35 years successfully farming and expanding their land base. Mom instilled in her children a strong work ethic and not to complain, but to do. Their 5 children grow up in an encouraging environment and became successful, which mom was always very proud of. Mom and dad retired from farming and moved to Prince Albert in 1976. Mary still in her early 50’s, and one to never just sit around took a job working at the Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert.
Mom enjoyed coffee and lunch times with friends and family at either the COOP or at home. She loved being surrounded by family during the holidays, always hosting Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, birthdays, and anniversary celebrations. Mom was a great hostess as she enjoyed cooking for family and friends. She always had homemade chicken soup, perogies, and cookies for her grandchildren. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always said the greatest gift they could give to her was a simple visit or phone call. Mom celebrated her 100th birthday in 2023 surrounded by her family enjoying a lovely lunch and companionship.
Mom was not the greatest traveler as she didn’t want to be too far from her family and home. However, agreed to some travelling, visiting family in Canada, and sightseeing in the USA. The most notable trips were to Hawaii and a 3-week trip to Europe to Frank’s visit family in Poland.
Mary was preceded by her husband Frank whom she was married to for 70 years, her sons, Wallace Zbaraschuk and an infant son (Gerald); daughter-in-law, Faye Zbaraschuk; great-granddaughter, Courtney Zbaraschuk; her parents; sisters, Alexandra (Lucy), Helen, Olga; and brothers, Peter, Wasyl, and Bohden.
Mary is survived by sons, Gerald (Madeline), Barry, Frank (Pat); daughter, Janet; daughter-in-law, Sharon; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Iris; and sisters-in-law, Sophie and Olga; and brother-in-law, Sam. Mary was loved by her family who will miss her, however we are comforted in that she will be again with her parents, husband, sons and other relatives where she will be in peace and comfort.
The family wishes to thank MSJ staff for taking care of mom over the past few years. Also, a special thanks to Father DJ for providing spirited cheerful conversation, music and song which brightened her days.
The Funeral Service for Mary will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, March 1, 2024, at River Park Funeral Home, in Prince Albert, SK, with Father DJ Vu and Deacon Eldon Danielson officiating.
