On Friday, September 9, 2016, Mrs. Mary Suchorab, late of Cudworth and formerly of Prince Albert, passed away at the Victoria Hospital at the age of 89 years. Mary was born in the Samburg district to John G. and Sally (nee Balan) Denesyk. She attended David School where she was taught by her brothers, Nick and Jim. Her Dad had the first post office, store and gas station in the area. Walter Suchorab would come for the mail and a courtship began. They were married in 1943 and lived with Walter’s family for 3 years. When their son Clarence was born, they bought land in the Weirdale district and together operated a mixed farm. Seven years later their daughter Carol was born. Mary and Walter’s home was always open to friends and neighbors. Her homemade cooking was delicious, fresh from the garden or canned. No one ever left hungry or empty handed. Mary had a strong work ethic. She was tiny but worked very hard. Mary loved to dance and she and Walter would attend many dances in the area. They also liked to play cards. Mary had a strong Christian faith. Mom and Dad would go to church on Sundays and also on Feast days. Mom remembered the Feast days until her passing. After Clarence married, Mary worked at various jobs in Prince Albert. When construction of the Pulp Mill began in 1965 and 1966, Mary was the cook on the construction site. After Carol married, Mary was still cooking, and watching the mill being built. Later she cooked in the cafeteria until she retired after 25 years. When Mary and Walter retired from farming they moved to Prince Albert. Her hobbies included cooking, canning, listening to Ukrainian music and going for coffee with friends. She was well known for her green thumb. Her home and yard were filled with beautiful flowers which she lovingly tended. After Walter passed away in 1993, Mary moved to Northcote where she would check on her neighbors to make sure they were alright and to bring them food. She will be remembered for being kind, caring and thoughtful. After her stroke in 2003 she lived in various care homes in Prince Albert, and when Carol moved to Prince Albert she lived with her. Her final home was in Cudworth, where she enjoyed visiting other residents. Her phone became her lifeline. Mary’s pride and joy were her granddaughters, great-granddaughters and grandsons. After her son Clarence passed away, she remained close to her daughter-in-law, Janet and her granddaughter. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Carol, her granddaughters Dawn Marie Harris and Janell (Rick) Ferris, great-granddaughters Brook, Bailey and Shelby, great-grandsons Wyatt and Jarred, and her daughter-in-law Janet Bennett. She is survived by her sister Pauline (Peter) Paskaruk, her sister-in-law Geraldine Denesyk, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Clarence in 1970, her husband Walter in 1993, her parents John and Sally Denesyk, her sister Isabelle Hodkiss, her brothers Nick (Lydia), George, Bill, Mike, Jim (Anne), Andrew (Pilar), and Alex (Geraldine), and her nephews, Kevin and Bobby Denesyk, as well as by her mother-in-law and father-in-law, six brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law. Mary’s funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Father Vasyl Kravchuk officiating. Interment to follow at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 26 – 1738 Quebec Avenue Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, S7K 1V9. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of River Park Memorial Chapel, Colette Harnett, Funeral Director.
