MARY KOSTIUK
Mary was born on July 7,1937 in the family home, a small log house on Sec., Twp., W4M., east of the old Tarnopol school. Mary was the third child of homesteading parents, Ivan and Barbara Dasiuk. Mary had four older stepbrothers, John, Harry, Fred and William, brothers Dmytro and Steve and one sister, Stella.
Mom grew up on a mixed farm and was kept busy, often assisting her father with the daily chores. She also cared for a very large garden along with her sibling and mother (gardening would be an annual tradition). She attended Tarnopol School (grades 1-8), a short 1.5-mile walk. Mother dreamed of becoming a teacher, but to continue after grade 8 she would have to move away to where higher grades were offered; instead, she decided to stay home and help with the farm.
Mary met and married John Kostiuk in 1952 and started a family shortly after. Times were not easy for this young couple as Dad worked for the railroad and was gone for several weeks at a time, while Mom worked at several jobs: waitressing at The Flamingo Restaurant, cleaning at Kyle’s Funeral Home, clerk at Stedman’s, then many years at the Melfort Union Hospital, working in house cleaning and dietary until her retirement 32 years later. Unable to sit at home doing nothing she started to work as a waitress at Sam’s Restaurant.
Mom enjoyed her garden each year, canning, baking and sewing. She loved to bowl, play bingo, fish and travel when she could. Grandma enjoyed her morning coffee and her daily soap, The Young and the Restless.
We will miss the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at her house with her famous perogies and cabbage rolls. Baba always made sure there was enough food for everyone to eat! Mary loved all her grandchildren, wanting the best for them and “to be safe.”
Mary struggled with health issues of late and passed away peacefully early Sept.1, 2025 with several grandchildren by her side. Baba was predeceased by her husband, John; daughter, Lilian; and son David.
Left to remember and cherish her memory, her sister, Stella; her daughters, Yvonne, Judy and Valerie; her son, Ron; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.
“Behave, I will be watching.” –Baba
