Mary Balon (nee Chytyk)
(May 11, 1920 – December 31, 2011)
Mary Balon was born in Wakaw, SK on May 11, 1920. She passed away in Melfort on December 31, 2011 at the age of 91 years.
Mom was definitely a “people person”. She loved to be around family and friends, and was always interested in what they were doing. Mom was a great cook and all visitors had plenty to eat. She loved gardening, cutting the grass, and looking after her flowers and shrubs. Everything had to be immaculate, that included the inside and outside of her house and yard. Mom’s greatest love and passion was sewing. She was definitely a perfectionist. She could be heard saying, “If you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all!!!”
Mom was encouraging, welcoming, kind and loving, but also stubborn and strong-willed. She was a flurry of activity, but would always make time for you, and was a good listener.
Mary is survived by her daughter Shirley Brassard (Mag Boucher) of Peace River, AB; her son Percy (Jacki) Balon of Melbourne, Australia; her granddaughter Karen (Ryan) Hee of Slave Lake, AB; her grandson Tom (Monica) Balon of Melbourne, Australia; one sister Doris (Lucky) St. Amand of Sudbury, ON; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Mike; her parents Michael & Anastasia Chytyk; four brothers Metro Chytyk, Mike Chytyk, Pete Chytyk and John Chytyk.
The Funeral Service was held from the Melfort United Church on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Emmanuel Menyereye officiating. Interment followed in Prince Albert Memorial Gardens.
If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be directed to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
