Marlene Birkeland

On September 9, 2015 at the age of 69 years, Marlene Birkeland passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her father Trygve Berg, her brother Arnie Berg and sister Joyce Christensen. She is survived by her mother Ethel Berg; Husband Cliff Birkeland; son Sheldon Birkeland, granddaughters Ilona and Maya; Brother Jim ( Ellen ) Berg and many nieces and nephews. Marlene was born on November 10, 1945 and grew up on a farm near Canwood, SK. After attending business school in Prince Albert she married her husband of 50 years Cliff in May 1965. Later they were blessed with their son Sheldon. They moved to Esterhazy where she had a few different jobs before starting as a teller at the Royal Bank, eventually becoming loans manager. During her years in Esterhazy she raised her family, made many great friends and enjoyed everything from taking care of her beloved dog JoJo to travelling North America on their Honda Gold Wing. After 23 years at the bank she retired in 1994. In retirement she enjoyed golfing, travel, snowmobiling and her wonderful group of bridge friends. A tireless volunteer, she spent many hours raising money for Donor’s Choice, managed the putting contest for the Charity Golf Classic and was treasurer for the Golden Jets. Her favorite activity of all was being mom to Sheldon and Grandma to Maya and Ilona who will remember her forever for her warm generous spirit.
A public reception was held on Thursday, September 17, 2015 from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. from the Esterhazy Golden Jets. A private service will take place at a later date. If friends so desire donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
