Mark "Ozzy" Odnokon
NewPosted 2 hours ago
Mark was born to John and Lorraine Odnokon in Moose Jaw, SK on October 22, 1962.
His never give up attitude and courageous spirit enabled him to live a life and leave a legacy defined by integrity and service. Known to many as Ozzy or Mr. O, his leadership abilities, sense of humor, love of sports, and the ability to see a special quality in others was at the heart of who he was.
He was a loving father to, Alex (Ryder) Jordan, Austin, Hallie (Emmanuel); grandchildren, Kace and Remi. He was a loving spouse to Dixie Nelson and her children, Zoe (Brady) and Zave (Jade).
Mark is also survived by the mother of his children, Brenda Randall; his brothers, Mick, Patrick (Carla), and Doug (Anne-Marie); sister, Pam (Ken) Albers; nieces and nephews, Casey (Brighton), Jay, Grace, and Andrew; great-nephews, Easton and Colter.
Mark dedicated much of his life to hockey, first as a talented athlete, then as a respected coach, scout and mentor. A proud Prince Albert Raider, he helped lead the team to multiple Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League titles and Centennial Cup championships before continuing his career with the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he earned two NCAA championships. He went on to play with the Salt Lake City Golden Eagles before returning to Saskatchewan to give back to the game he loved. Mark became the Melfort Mustangs first head coach. He helped build the foundation for the team’s first championship in the 1991-92 season before moving on to the Raiders in the WHL. He continued to mentor young athletes working as a scout for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
Mark was the co-owner, developer and instructor of NorSask Hockey Development camp for over 20 years. He was also integral in bringing back the PJHL Timberjaks to Prince Albert. His skill set served him well as a teacher in Shellbrook and Carlton Comprehensive High School. Mark was proud to help shape the development of the Sports Academy. Truthfully, he was a lifelong Raider who served the organization as a stick boy, player, coach, skills coach and Respect Champion. Mark “lived and breathed Raiders” and was a mentor and trusted support for many players. He loved his students, the players he coached, but with all that Mark was, he loved his family. He was the best papa to his grandchildren, a role he cherished so much.
The family would like to thank everyone who reached out with stories, memories, kind words, and support during Mark’s brief battle with cancer. The outpouring of love shared has brought comfort to all who knew and loved him.
