Margaret “Anita” Torbert
1944 ~ 2022
Margaret “Anita” Torbert (née Altman) of Prince Albert, SK passed away peacefully Friday, September 2, 2022 at Mount St. Joseph at the age of 78.
Anita was born April 24,1944 at the hospital in Loon Lake, SK. She grew up on a mixed farm east of St Walburg, SK. After her graduation she moved to Saskatoon and then Prince Albert to attend nursing school. She graduated in 1964 and got her first job at the Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert until it closed. She then transferred to Victoria Hospital. Eventually she worked as an RN in long term care homes, including Pineview. Anita was a true caregiver. She loved being a nurse and was always concerned with everyone’s well being.
Anita was a devoted wife, mother and daughter. She met and married Humphrey Vandale in 1964 and had five amazing children. They were married until Humphrey’s passing in 1990.
Anita loved spending time with her family through camping, swimming, ski-dooing, skiing (downhill and cross country), and traveling. She enjoyed baking, cooking, and sewing. Often making clothes for herself and her family. She enjoyed being outdoors, and could always be found tending to her garden or doing yard work. Anita enjoyed watching all and any kind of sports. Anita was an active participant in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives. She was always attending sporting events, competitions, and graduations. Anita could be seen cheering from the sidelines. CBC radio could always be heard in her house.
Anita met and married Ken Torbert in 1993. Together they attended Wesley United Church until it closed. Through the church they were able to help Karen refugee families from Burma and Southeast Asia come to Canada to settle in Prince Albert. Anita and Ken traveled to and lived in India for a year. They worked as missionaries. They were married until Ken’s passing in 2015.
After 35 years in nursing Anita retired, but stayed connected to her community. She volunteered at the Rawlingson Centre, United Church, Mount St. Joseph, and campaigned for diabetes. She was never boastful and had a good sense of humour. Anita lived a fulfilling life and loved her family. She was the best role model a family could ask for.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children; Michele (Daryl) Sachkowski, Chris Vandale (Dan Roode), Dion Vandale (Terri-Lynn Georget), Pam (Beau Jean) Fouquette, Kurtis Vandale.
