BURNHAM- Maie, late of Weldon. Maie Hunter (Wood) Burnham was born to Herbert and Marion Wood near Edinburgh, Scotland on July 12, 1920. She was the eldest of two daughters. Maie was a war bride who married Roy Burnham on January 12, 1945 and immigrated to Canada on March 2, 1946. Her first impression of Canada was that it was a land flowing with milk and honey and her opinion of Canada never changed.
Maie and Roy lived in Saskatoon for a time until they bought the general store in Weldon in 1952. Maie continued operating the store after Roy passed in 1975, with the help of her good friends Dolores and Gayleen. She retired from the store in 1987. Maie’s mother Marion, immigrated to Canada in May of 1976 and lived with her until her passing in 1987.
Maie was an avid reader who enjoyed a great variety of books. She kept up with current events and loved a good discussion of what was going on in the world. Her other companions in life were dogs, a great number of birds and the wild cats that took up residence under her porch when she started to feed them. She enjoyed crafts and a number of friends and family treasured the colourful afghans she gifted to them. Many babies of the Weldon area would have been weighed on the scales at the store and received treats there as they grew older. One of her greatest passions was going to garage sales and finding treasures that she used to decorate her home.
When her health started failing, she sold her house and moved into the Weldon Country Villa in 2006. The wonderful care she received there enriched her life for the next 5 years. As her health deteriorated and she required more care, she moved to the Birchview Nursing Home in Birch Hills where she resided from January 2011 until her passing.
She was predeceased by her husband Roy; parents Herbert & Marion Wood; sister and brother-in-law Phoebe & Robert Hinze; sisters and brothers-in-law Ken & Fern Burnham and Meida & Irv Brooks. Left to mourn her passing are numerous Burnham, Brooks and Hinze nieces and nephews; special friends Dolores & Doug Welsh and Gayleen & Vern Gronvold and many people from the community of Weldon that have known her over the years.
Funeral service will be held at the Weldon Lutheran Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 20th, 2011. Memorial donations can be made to the Weldon Country Villa, the Prince Albert SPCA or a charity of the donor’s choice.
