Aline Magella “Madge” Smytaniuk: September 20, 1936 – November 26, 2025. Born in St. Laurent, SK to Alfred and Beatrice Gervais. Madge was one of 10 children. At the age of 15, Madge moved to Prince Albert, SK and worked at the Marlboro Inn as a chambermaid.
Set up on a blind date in 1953, Madge met and married (1954), the love of her life and husband of 55 years, William “Bill” Smytaniuk. The couple along with their 2 oldest children moved to St. Louis, SK in 1961, where the rest of their family was born and raised.
Madge was a devout Catholic and ensured her children were raised with Faith; one of her favorite places to visit was the Lady of Lourdes Shrine
Madge had a strong, no-nonsense approach to running her household, so it was no surprise she spent 21 years (1974-1995) as a Correctional Officer with Pine Grove Correctional Centre in Prince Albert SK where she was affectionately known by both staff and inmates as ‘Smitty’.
A passionate sport supporter, Madge’s voice and ‘encouraging yelling’ could be heard across the St. Louis rink during the local hockey games. Madge enjoyed playing cards, curling, bowling bingo and her yard, but her biggest passion was family – weekends were for family and friends.
Madge will be lovingly remembered by: her five children: Debbie (Mike), Diane (Neil), Larry (Sherry), Mark (Karla) and Darren (Sarah); her fifteen grandchildren: Keith (Nicole), Cara, Mark (Christa), Trevor (Malia), Allyssha (Gordie), Sarah (Thomas), Brad, Amanda (Tim), Sheena, Mitch, Ty, Randy (Chelsea), Michelle (Mat), DJ, Jordan (Wesley); her twenty-four great grandchildren: Liam, Riley, Olivia, Wyatt, Dawson, Shiylee, Rakel, Kyrah, Tora, Layne, Mary, Emmah, Shiylee, Mason, Presley, Cole, Elizah, Maggie, Gus, Alexis, Braylin, Cyla, Brielle, Scarlett; her sister’s: Linda (Lorenzo), Therese; her brother Arthur (Fran); as well as numerous relatives and friends.
