Madeline Phoebe Rhodes Widmer, “Madie”, at 88 years of age, surrounded with so much love, passed into the arms of her Saviour on November 3, 2025, at Rose Garden Hospice in Prince Albert, SK.
Madie was born to Charles and Annie Rhodes in Calgary, AB on July 4, 1937. She was the eldest of 3 sisters. She grew up in Riley Park and enjoyed piano and voice lessons. Music was a huge part of her life growing up and brought her much joy throughout her years.
She received her RN degree from Calgary General Hospital in 1958. That same year, she began a Bible School Course in Edmonton. Upon completion, she headed to Hay River, NWT to nurse. She loved her time there and spoke of it often.
Madie met William Widmer in 1963. She gave him her address, they corresponded and were married in September 1964. With much apprehension, Madie moved to a ranch in Maple Creek, SK as a newlywed, to a home with no bathroom, running water or telephone. Bill and Madie welcomed Janelle in 1965 and Kevin in 1967.
She loved to sew, making clothes for her family and quilts for missions. Madie worked hard with Bill on the ranch, learning to pull calves and bottle feed them, haul bales, and check the cows. She made delicious meals for her family, and our freezer was always full of baking and beef.
Madie went to work at Maple Creek Hospital in 1973, where she loved her job for 25 years.
Mom was a faithful member of the Pentecostal Church in Maple Creek and treasured her lifelong friends. She was a woman of great faith, kindness, and generosity, and many lives were blessed by her.
Bill passed away in 2012, and Mom missed him fiercely. She kept busy baking cookies for church activities, babysitting her grandchildren, and visiting family and friends. Mom moved to Prince Albert in 2021 to be nearer to Janelle and her family and resided at Abbeyfield House. Mom loved the dear people, Wednesday night bingo, the coffee afternoons, and the care given. She loved sitting on the deck at Janelle’s home, watching the seasons change and talking about her grandkids and God.
Madie is survived by: her daughter, Janelle (Byron) Matice of Prince Albert; grandchildren Mackenzie (Carson Lafrance), Christian, Samuel (Rebbeca), Noah (Summer); great grandson Maximus Matice; and bonus great-grandkids Michael, Mason, and Ellyse; Her son, Kevin Widmer (Jennifer), and their children Mya, Chance, and Trinity of Medicine Hat, AB; her beloved sisters, Sharon Rhodes (Kamloops, BC), Margaretanne (Ian) Tegart (Cloverdale, BC); she also is survived by many nieces and nephews and brothers- and sisters-in-law.
