James Lyall Sturgeon
June 29, 1939 – August 27, 2025
It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, James Lyall Sturgeon, who left us peacefully on August 27, 2025. He was born in Dalhousie, New Brunswick, on June 29th,1939 to the late James Lyall Sturgeon and Caroline (nee Gratton). He was the youngest of 13 children. Lyall is survived by his five children, David (Christine), Julie (partner Jock), Carol (Mark), Ann Marie, and Colleen; his two stepchildren, Greg (Michelle) and Ryan (Tanya); his 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Valerie (nee Zerr), his parents, and his 12 siblings.
Lyall grew up with a sense of adventure and a deep love for his family. He had a lifelong passion for travel, fishing, hunting, and working in his workshop. He was a proud member of the Lions Club, the Legion, Knights of Columbus and a devoted member of the Catholic Church. He found contentment in the simple pleasures of life and always made time for family, friends, and his community.
Lyall dedicated his career to public service, working in senior management with the Department of Indigenous and Northern Affairs.
In his passing, we feel a deep sense of loss, but we also find comfort in the countless memories he leaves behind. He will be forever cherished in our hearts, and his legacy will live on through his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who supported Lyall and his family during this time.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Parish, 292 Main Street East, Christopher Lake, SK. Please join the family for light refreshments at the Broda Lounge, Gary Anderson Community Centre, Christopher Lake, SK, following the service.
