Luba Crawford-Hintz

On January 19th, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer, Luba (Lu) Crawford-Hintz passed away in the arms of her loving husband Ron (Karl). Lu is predeceased by: her first husband, George Crawford; infant nephew Miles Helbig; father, Joseph Helbig; sister, Julia Parenteau; second husband, Peter Petruk ; nephew, Lance Cudmore; infant granddaughter, Luaral Crawford-McKenzie; sister-in-law Ella Helbig; son Ian Crawford; mother, Stefanie Helbig ; brother-in-law Kenneth Cudmore . Lu was born on August 27, 1926 while travelling through Poland on the way to Canada to Stefanie (Popovitch) and Joseph Helbig. She married George Crawford and moved to Hespeler, Ontario where they raised four sons. Lu attained her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education in Ontario. After George’s passing in 1977 she and James moved back to her hometown area of Paddockwood, SK where she continued teaching until retirement. She was married to Peter Petruk of Paddockwood area in 1978 until Peter’s passing in 1984. Lu had a great love for tourism and the outdoors. After retiring as a dedicated teacher of 38 years, she made her full-time job operating her parents resort Joe’s Cabins at Minowukaw Beach, Candle Lake. She loved to travel where she visited many places and saw many things. Lu had a true desire and love for her community. She was a valuable member and the driving force behind many community organizations and initiatives within Candle Lake and its surrounding area. She played a major role and headed the plan of developing a church for the community. Lu was very proud of this achievement. Lu married Ron(Karl) Hintz on January 1, 1991. Together they worked as a team operating the resort and welcoming the many people that came to enjoy the atmosphere of Minowukaw Beach and Joe’s Cabins. They eventually achieved their common dream of building the beautiful “Ponderosa Pine Lodge” in the forest along the Torch River. Lu was and will always be known by many as the spunky little blonde lady from Joe’s Cabins who was always planning another venture. Her final dream, that was unable to be carried out in time, was for the community to have its own health clinic. Her awards & accomplishments included: Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal (2004), Saskatchewan Woman of Distinction– Lifetime Achievement Award (2004), Saskatchewan Centennial Medal presented by Governor General (2005), and Director of Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce. Lu was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by: her husband, Ron(Karl) Hintz; sons:Wayne (Patty) Crawford of Candle Lake, SK and children Bob and Cathy; Dennis (Dawn) Crawford of Prince Albert and children Tyler and Jay; James (Annie) Crawford of Stanley Mission, SK and children Tristan, Caitlin, Carolyn, Brody and Brycen; brother Walter (Lorraine) Helbig of Candle Lake, SK; brother-in-law Ed Parenteau;special friend Sandra Burke-Morley (mother of Tristan & Caitlin); nieces Deborah (Grant) Leedahl, Nadine (Douglas) Wilson, Pamela (Floyd) Sukut, Cheryl Cudmore-Coleman, and Treena Parenteau; nephew Sean Parenteau; as well as numerous great nieces & great nephews, many friends, her special dogs Chopper, Shu-shu and Sparky. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Candle Lake Health Clinic. A Memorial Celebration will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 1:00 pm in the Candle Lake Recreation Hall, Candle Lake, SK. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.northernfuneralservice.ca.
