Lorraine Lavoie

February 25, 1945-September 13, 2021

With sadness in our hearts, and memories to give us strength, we announce the passing of our pillar of strength after a courageous battle with cancer.

Lorraine, was born in Prince Albert, to Alfred and Lydia Hetu, she was the youngest of eight children, Roland, Lilian (Clement) Arcand, Lionel (June), Robert (Loraine), Isabel (Ed) Ukrainetz, Norman Hetu, Ruby Hetu.

Lorraine grew up on the family farm in the Laventure district , she attended North Creek School ( her father was a trustee for 19 years) and Spiritwood Separate School. Lorraine loved horses and rode her horse to school many times, even picking up fellow classmates who didn’t have the luxury of a horse and had to walk. Lorraine was a very caring and giving person who always wanted to help out. She helped her father with everything on the farm, there was nothing she would not try to tackle, this was exemplified through out her life.

Lorraine lost both of her parents at a very early age, life was not easy, these experiences gave her the brave, courageous, passionate, feisty, get over it and get on with your life characteristics, we saw in her to her last breath.

Lorraine met Aime in Leoville as she was the pin setter at the local bowling alley, she said she always hated when Aime would come to bowl . She said “ he would throw the balls so hard you had to try to jump out of the way. One time Aime came in and fired the ball down , Lorraine jumped to get out of the way and ended up ripping her brand new wool pants, she was upset !!! She marched out and told Aime exactly what she thought. Not long after this event, following Laventure Sunday church service, Aime asked Lorraine to go to the Laventure store for an Orange pop and he swept her off her feet when he also bought her an Oh Henry bar. The rest is history, and in Lorraine’s own words “ I married the love of my life on July 6, 1961, they were married for 54 years.

Lorraine was a leader , she was involved with the church, school , 4-H, museum and most recently a passionate quilter.

She worked on their mixed farm, and then later their dairy farm, while raising their family of four boys.

In 1981 they moved to the town of Spiritwood, they owned and operated the Pine lounge. Later they purchased Spiritwood Hi-Way service , which was destroyed by fire. They rebuilt and everyone knew the log building on the highway ; Gateway North Cafe and Catering.

Lorraine and Aime welcomed everyone who patronized them, a good piece of pie, coffee and a visit with Lorraine was to be had on each visit, her inquisitiveness led to her knowing why you were in town! Lorraine trained many staff members as she taught them life skills for their futures.

Lorraine loved her flowers , watching the birds in her garden, she loved company, was always very welcoming , was the life of the party, always very witty, and she was good company to be around. She loved a good game of cards, cribbage or Rummikub, winning brought a twinkle to her eye. She loved her quilting retreats, she loved to travel and was quick to pack her bags to go! Curling was a passion for her, either on the ice or watching on television. She was a fire cracker to the point you never had to wonder what she was thinking! Lorraine loved her family and friends, her house was always open for company.
