Leo Joseph Boran
(June 30, 1920 – August 10, 2011)
Leo Joseph Boran passed away peacefully at the age of 91 years after a very brief illness on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the Victoria Hospital surrounded by family.
Prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, August 15 from River Park Memorial Chapel – 301 River Street West. Sister Renée Buliard will officiate. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 16 from St. Mark Roman Catholic Church – 581 – 9th Street East – by Father Tuan Doan. Leo was born in the Samburg District north of Prince Albert on June 30 – 1920 to Wasyl and Gafista (nee Smytaniuk) Boran.
Leo is survived by his sister Stella (Paul Kowalchuk), brother Nick (Margaret), sister Anne, daughter Dorothy; son Gregory and his daughter Kelsea; son Geofrey and his daughters Celeste (Tyson Fetch), Trina and Melissa (Caley O’Connor); daughter Connie (Terry Campen) and their daughters Crystal and Katie; daughter Christine (Jim Kendall) and their daughter Jesse and son Lucas. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Caissey, Olivia, Duncan, Fenna, Austin and Dallas as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Domka, sister Jenny Langford, brother Walter, infant son Gerard and his wife Melvina.
Following the death of his mother, he and his siblings were taken to the orphanage in Prince Albert. After leaving school, he trained as a carpenter, but when WWII came, he enlisted in the Canadian Navy where he served for three years. He met Mel while building the cupboards at the Wings Café in Prince Albert. They were engaged February 14 and married May 15, 1946. They were the first couple to be married in the new parish of St. Mark. Leo and Louie Antal started a construction company – Antal and Boran Construction.
Leo was active in the Knights of Columbus, coached PeeWee hockey, enjoyed fishing, card playing, winemaking, berry and mushroom picking and was a goal judge for the Prince Albert Raiders for many years. After retirement he increased his favorite activities and continued to create beautiful pieces of furniture, windows and doors. After Mel died in 1999, he lived independently. At the age of 88, a stroke briefly set him back.
Interment will take place in the Garden of Gethsemane of Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. It is the family’s request that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan – Regina Office, 2360 – 2nd Avenue, Regina, SK S4R 1A6.
