Leander Schmalz

It is with very heavy hearts, that the family of Leander Harlan Schmalz, known to all as Lea, announce his sudden passing on January 17, 2016 at the age of 63. Lea was born on June 6, 1952 to Alphonse and Esther Schmalz in Shellbrook, Sk. Lea and his siblings Elaine and Wesley were raised by Alphonse and Esther on a farm south of town. He attended the local school until left to work on the oil rigs in the north. He returned to farming and completed his plumber’s certificate. During this time he started dating Asta Hotvedt. They were married on June 7, 1975 and made their home on the Lea’s farm. They had two boys, Chad and Craig. Lea’s passion was the outdoors. Any free time Lea had was spent in his love of hunting, fishing, camping and being with friends. Lea remained on the farm until his passing.
Lea is lovingly survived by: his wife – Asta, his sons – Chad and Craig, his mother – Esther, his siblings – Elaine and Wesley, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in laws and extended family. Lea was predeceased by: his father – Alphonse, his parents- in- law – Henry and Mabel Hotvedt, his brothers- in-law – John MacInnis and Robert Hotvedt, and his grandparents, and numerous other relatives. As per Lea’s wishes, there will be a private memorial held at a later date.
In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations may be forwarded, in the memory of Lea, to the CNIB (Canadian National Institute For The Blind, 1929 Bayview Ave., Toronto, ON M4G 3E8). .
