Kerry Hubel Feb 14, 1948 – Nov 4, 2022. On November 4th Kerry passed away in Victoria BC after a hard-fought battle with cancer. She is survived by her loving partner Doug Kemp and 2 sons, Mike Burrell (grandsons Emrys and Cohen) of Victoria and Chris Burrell (Lana Winship) of Vancouver. She is also survived by 3 sisters in Saskatoon – Margie Tucker (Fred Ozirney), Sandy Tucker, Janice Peace (Mike), and nephew Dylan Peace.
She was born in Saskatoon to Hal and Naomi Tucker. Shortly after, the family moved to P.A. where her 3 sisters were born. Growing up, Kerry enjoyed skiing, curling and summers spent at the family’s cabin at Waskesiu. She obtained her BA at the Univ. of Sask and subsequently moved to Edmonton where she met her first husband Glenn Burrell. After their first son, Mike, was born, the family moved back to P.A. where their second son, Chris, was born. Kerry worked for several years at CKBI Radio. After Kerry and Glenn divorced, Kerry went back to university and obtained her B. Ed. in 1980. She taught at several schools in P.A. where she met many life-long friends. In 1988 she married Jerry Hubel, and they enjoyed many happy occasions at their cabin at Emma Lake before his passing in 1996.
In 2003 she met her current partner Doug Kemp, and they began their new lives together. Kerry retired in 2008 and when Doug retired in 2016, they moved to Victoria B.C. to be closer to her sons and their families. They were very happy in their new home in Victoria, enjoying lots of family get togethers, time spent with new friends, golfing and long walks on scenic trails.
Kerry was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2016. She never gave up on her fight with cancer with Doug standing right beside her and refused to let cancer define her. She was especially grateful for the care and great compassion she received from Dr. Heather Sutherland in the stem cell transplant program at Vancouver General Hospital.
Over the last year, as Kerry’s health declined, she and Doug spent more time going for drives around Victoria and parking by the ocean with their coffees, watching the ships in the harbor.
There will be no formal memorial service held but rather the family will hold a private gathering at a later date. She will be deeply missed.
