The family of Kathie Bird is heartbroken to announce her unexpected passing at the young age of 67. She was surrounded by loving family when she died peacefully in the ICU this past Tuesday night. Despite the heroic efforts of the ICU team, sepsis took over her body, and then took her, within hours.

All her life, Kathie was an incredibly talented artist (www.kathiebird.com), poet, and writer. By profession, she was a mental health therapist, dedicated to helping people. Her early-life connection to northern communities and the people within them prompted her to seek work in some of those communities during her career, where her spirit and kind endeavors touched many.

Kathie was a long-time member and co-chair of the Kyla Art Group in Prince Albert. She often combined her artistic side with her professional side, beautifully portraying the love and community in the north, and the humanity she saw in marginalized groups and people. She was a spiritual healer and often wove that aspect of herself into her works, using colour and depth to exquisitely portray spirit and energy.

Kathie was also an avid traveler! The urge to travel and experience different countries and cultures was one of her many driving forces; another was to be able to share her experiences with friends and family and, “make good memories, because those are more valuable than anything”. She realized her dream and visited many countries, including Mexico, Spain, Italy, Jamaica, Scotland, Ireland, Africa, Peru, Costa Rica, and many others, always traveling with friends she made on previous trips. Her favourite kind of trips were when she traveled with family. She made a point of including her children and grandchildren on several occasions, but especially cherished her trips with her sisters.

Anyone who has been travelling with her will remember days and night full of laughter and love. Those valuable memories are a true treasure now.

Kathie was a loving mother and wife. She had an especially close bond with her grandchildren. Leaving to remember her fondly with love are: her husband, Trygve Lee; her daughter, Sharie (Corwin), and son Cedar (Christine); her two stepsons, Shawn and Chad (Charity); her grandchildren, Aiden, Alex, Emma, Ellie, and Jacob; her two sisters, Dianne (Dennis) and Shirley (Phil); a number of nieces and nephews; and her beloved dogs, Watson and Denver.

The family would like to thank the ICU staff at Victoria Hospital for their compassion and care during all those difficult moments. Kathie wished to be cremated, and the family has honored those wishes. In lieu of flowers to the family, donations to the Rose Garden Hospice in Kathie’s name would be greatly appreciated.

A Life Honoring Gathering to celebrate Kathie will be held at another date in late spring, when the flowers bloom.
