Katherine Joy Lett
Katherine Joy Lett, known as Joy to friends and family, passed away on Sunday, May 6th at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, after a long battle with cancer, she was 85. Joy was predeceased by her husband Joe Lett; sister Nonie Daniels; brother Jack Heinrich; parents Deidrich and Ethel (Ellis) Heinrich and granddaughter Danika Lett. She is survived by her three sons Glenn (Sandra) Lett of Prince Albert, Rick (Feng) Lett of Prince Albert and Doug (Florence) Lett of Saskatoon; along with 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren and by her two brothers Ray (Polly) Heinrich of Davidson and Ron (Mildred) Heinrich of Burlington ON. Joy was born October 4, 1926 in Davidson, the second oldest of five children. She grew up on the family farm, first in Davidson and later in Wynyard, where the family moved in the 1930’s, later moving back to Davidson. She entered nursing, took part of her training in Bermuda and graduated as an RN, working in a variety of communities. In 1954 she married Joe Lett. They lived in Glenavon, in Regina and settled down in North Battleford to raise their growing family. Joy worked as a supervisor in emergency in the Battlefords Union Hospital for many years. She later took a job with Medical Services with Indian Affairs and worked in communities like Thunderchild and Poundmaker. Work then took Joy and Joe to Prince Albert, then Regina and in 1986 Joe and Joy retired to Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island. Their home became a gathering place for their children, nieces and nephews and other relatives. Fishing trips, seafood meals, love and hospitality were extended to all. Joe and Joy gained many great friends during their 20 years in Qualicum Beach. It was a time and place to indulge their passions for golf, curling, bridge and teaching many grandchildren how to play crib. They were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 2004. Joe died in 2005 and in 2006 Joy moved back to Prince Albert to be closer to her children. As in Qualicum Beach, her home became a gathering place. The most defining characteristic of Joy’s life was her care and compassion for others. She expressed it through her nursing career, countless hours spent doing volunteer work for groups like the Red Cross and Canadian Cancer Society and endless care for her family. Her faith in God helped her through many struggles, including six different bouts with cancer over the years. Funeral Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Gray's Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK with Reverend James Fast and Reverend Tony Thompson officiating. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to Canadian Cancer Society, 54 – 11th Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 0Z9. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca.
