Joyce Patricia Daniels 1930-2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Joyce Daniels (nee Hagen) late of Shellbrook, SK, on March 8, 2025, at the age of 94 years.
Mom was born July 17, 1930, the seventh of nine children born to Peter and Ida Hagen. She was raised in the Hagen district attending school at Harmony and upon graduation moved to Saskatoon to attend Normal School. She then taught in rural schools at lranistan, Hilldrop, Tweedsmuir, and Yankee Valley. During this time, she met the absolute love of her life, a tall, dark, handsome farmer named Fred Daniels. They married on December 7, 1956, and lived in the Cameo district west of Shellbrook in a small farmhouse built by Fred, his dad Walter, and several close neighbors. Life was busy as mom continued to teach for a couple of years as well as helping with the farm, feeding pigs, milking cows, hauling bales, gardening, canning, baking and eventually raising two children, Karen born in 1961 and Kevin born in 1964. A few years after dad passed away (1973) mom was in the first group of ladies hired as special care aids at the newly built Parkland Terrace Nursing Home. She worked there for eighteen and a half years, retiring at age 65. While mom was a teacher, farmer, and special care aide, whenever she was asked about her occupation she always said “Farmer”.
Mom loved watching her crops grow, she used to walk for hours out in her fields to see how things were progressing and what weeds were growing. When the crops were too tall to walk through, she would drive by nearly every day to check on them. Mom also loved watching her family as it grew generation by generation. Grandchildren and great grandchildren have wonderful memories of time spent with “Grandma D”. She will be missed but never forgotten.
We would like to thank the physicians and staff at the Victoria Hospital who cared for mom during her hip surgery; the staff at Parkland Integrated Health Centre who cared for mom during her recovery; and the staff at the Big River Long Term Care Home who provided such compassionate care during mom’s final months. Your guidance and kindness will not be forgotten.
Mom will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Karen (Greg) Spencer and grandchildren: Danielle (James) Barth, Jase & Jersy; Nicole (Matthew) Senger , Barrett, Parker & Piper; Cody (Christine) Spencer, Chloe & Cayde; her son Kevin (Ashley Spilak) Daniels and grandchildren: Brooke (Killian), Cole and Jude; her sister Bernice Singer; sister-in-law Betty Lou Hagen and numerous nieces and nephews.
