The family of Joyce Middleton sadly announce her passing on October 8, 2025, at the Herb Bassett Home in Prince Albert. Joyce was born in Regina, SK, to Linda and Bryson McGiffin on June 23, 1936.
When Joyce was just a toddler, her father became ill, and Joyce and her mom moved to Kinistino to live with ‘Steena and Frank Montgomery. There, Joyce, Linda, Uncle Frank, Auntie Steena and cousin, Vern became a family. In 1942 they moved to Prince Albert where Joyce attended Prince Edward elementary school and PACI secondary school. As a child she enjoyed biking, swimming in the local lakes, figure skating, cross-country skiing, curling and tobogganing. Growing up she spent many hours at the piano, and in the percussion section of the high school band. She was extremely musical and an accomplished pianist. After high school, Joyce attended the University of Saskatchewan School of Nursing, graduating in 1957. That same year she married Bob Middleton, and they welcomed 3 children, Paul, Pamela and Valerie. Her career as a nurse began in Weyburn hospital, and later worked at the Holy Family Hospital and Community Clinic in Prince Albert retiring in 1992.
Joyce’s love for music was lifelong. She sang in various choirs throughout her life, as well taught piano lessons, and played the organ for St Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Joyce enjoyed travelling, visiting many countries worldwide, but fiercely loved Canada and enjoyed its varied landscape from coast to coast. Always interested in learning a new craft, Joyce’s home was filled with her creations in knitting, cross stitch, painting, sketching, stained glass and pottery. However her greatest love was for her family.
Joyce is predeceased by parents, Linda and Bryson McGiffin; and her companion, Russell Casey. She is survived by her son, Paul Middleton of Nanaimo, BC, and family, Linda Middleton and Jared (Noah) McKimm; her daughter, Pamela Smith (Dean), of Cranbrook, BC, and their family, Zachary (Alexis) Smith and Ben (Karah) Smith; her daughter, Valerie Parenteau (Conrad) of Struthers Lake, SK, and their family, Jennifer (Robbie Malone) Parenteau, Bryson (Jayelle) Parenteau and Jordan (Paige) Parenteau; as well as numerous great-grandchildren; and her former daughter-in-law, Natasia Ilkiw.
