Joyce Adelaide Barber passed away peacefully at Poseidon Care Centre on September 27, 2021 at 93 years of age.
Joyce is survived by her son John (Collette) Barber of Winnipeg; daughter Nancy (Wayne) Simpson of Prince Albert, SK; grandchildren, Kera and Sondra Barber, Adrienne (Shayne) Carlson, Scott Simpson, and Kate (Trent) Stuckel of Prince Albert, SK; great grandchildren, Gia and Dreya Carlson and Levon Stuckel; niece Dawne Smith of Cochrane, AB; second cousin and dear friend, Lois Powne of Winnipeg; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Joyce was predeceased by her beloved husband, Alex in 2001 and by her parents Bill and Gladys Powne of Melita, MB; and her only sister, Donna Bogle of Calgary, AB.
Joyce was born on March 21, 1928 in Deloraine, MB. She lived in Melita until she graduated high school. After completing business college in Winnipeg, she returned to Melita. It is there she met the one and only love of her life, Alex Barber, who was serving a pastoral charge with the United Church of Canada at Lyleton, MB.
Joyce and Alex were married in Melita in 1948 and shortly afterwards moved to Hamiota, MB where both John and Nancy were born.
As Alex served a number of pastoral charges, they resided in Hamiota, Regina, Winnipeg and Prince Albert. Upon Alex’s retirement, they returned to Melita for a number of years and then made their home at the Fred Douglas Place in Winnipeg where they fostered many close relationships with the other residents. Joyce and Alex enjoyed wintering in Mesa, AZ where they cultivated new friendships and enjoyed activities in the warm climate. After Alex’s death Joyce continued to reside at Fred Douglas place and in 2017, she moved into The Wellington where she happily renewed existing friendships and established new relationships. In 2020 she moved to the Poseidon Care Center as she required more personal care.
For many years, Joyce was active in the United Church Women’s groups and enjoyed singing in the choir. Her love of music and gifted singing voice drew her to participate in the Watsonairs choir in Prince Albert, where she enjoyed many friendships. Joyce was always present to lend a hand to friends and family when needed.
While Joyce and Alex resided in Prince Albert, they often would spend summer evenings fishing at Candle or Waskesiu Lakes enjoying the beauty and serenity of northern Saskatchewan.
Joyce loved to bake and you could always count on fresh baking when visiting. Many delighted in sharing her famous lemon loaf which was often served when friends, or the children and grandchildren would stop by for visits.
Joyce so cherished time spent with her family, and was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, supporting them in all of their endeavors.
Joyce’s faith in Christ was integral to her life, and she lived her life accordingly, with integrity, compassion, and humility. She always had a kind word for everyone, was slow to anger, and was always a gracious and loving person. She was never one to complain, even when her health began to fail.
Many thanks to the medical, nursing and entire house staff of Poseidon Care Centre for their caring assistance and compassion for Joyce and her family while she was in their care.
Cremation has occurred and a private family service will take place.
Donations may be made in memory of Joyce to St. Andrew’s River Heights United Church Foundation at 255 Oak Street, Winnipeg R3M 3P7.
