Joseph Jr. Gariepy

Joe was born on June 17th, 1956, in the Birch Hills, SK hospital, a thalidomide baby. Growing up, he enjoyed playing hockey and baseball. He was a goalie and a pitcher. He led a team in a slow pitch league called the Birch Hills Bandits. Joe was probably the only Gariepy that was any good at sports.
Joe lived in various places in Alberta, as well as Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Birch Hills, Weldon, and finally Crystal Springs. He worked as a drywaller for many years and then as a courier for 17 years before retiring due to ill health.
He was a member of the Nutana Legion in Saskatoon where he enjoyed spending his spare time socializing with friends and playing shuffleboard, darts, and crib. He was also a member of the Weldon Elks.
Most recently, he joined the Metis Local #43 and looked forward to meeting and social gatherings with other members, many of whom were cousins and old friends.
Joe loved hockey and football. He was a Toronto Maple Leaf fan and a Roughrider fan. During the Grey Cup playoffs, we would get together and have a meal and watch the game. Each Rider touchdown was celebrated with a green shooter, supplemented with a beer as the touchdowns were sometimes scarce. There was a competition with others to see who had the largest tv. He recently bought himself a 75” tv, beating Rick’s, and was meant to watch the upcoming sports events.
Joe also was a good cook back in the day. He made the best lasagna and chocolate cake. He enjoyed a good pizza and loved haystack cookies, donuts, and apple pie.
Joe was always willing to lend a hand when he was able and always up for a cup of coffee and a visit.
He loved a campfire and a good party. In his honor, we will be returning to his residence to have a few drinks and reminisce. He has been stocking his liquor cupboard for this day so let’s all go to Crystal Springs and enjoy a toast to his memory. Fireworks at dark!
