John Robert Batty of Leask, SK passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, in Prince Albert at the age of 76.
He was born March 12, 1950, the first of two sons, to John “Jack” and Evelyn Batty. He and his brother Gerald were only fifteen months apart, so he had a close playmate, as well as a determined competitor in whatever he did. Growing up on the farm in the Avebury District, his mom and dad always took time to flood a rink, play hockey and ball with their boys, and teach them to love the great outdoors.
Upon graduating from high school in 1968, John attended the University of Saskatchewan for one year to play football with the Huskies. After taking one year of Renewable Resources at SIAST, he decided that city living wasn’t for him and came home permanently to farm alongside his dad.
On August 16, 1980, John married the love of his life, Darlene Prystupa. Together they developed their beautiful lakefront property on Iroquois Lake, where they raised three children. Sports were always a big part of John’s life. Once his own playing days were behind him, he enjoyed many years coaching his kids’ ball and hockey teams. He also remained active with hunting, trapping, archery, ski-dooing, and skiing. John was well-known for his knowledge and skill in repairing and restoring snowmobiles. He also enjoyed hosting countless gatherings for family and friends. His quick-wit and sense of humour served him well throughout his life.
John and Darlene were blessed with twelve beautiful grandchildren, who quickly stole their grandpa’s heart. He made the most of time spent with them, spoiled them rotten and supported them in all they did.
Left with endless cherished memories are his wife of 45 years, Darlene; his loving mother, Evelyn Batty; his children and their spouses: Joyanne (Joe) Dufour, Allison (Dillan) Simonar, and Jay (Raelene) Batty. His grandchildren: Ayden Dufour (Leah McSymytz), Ellianna, Lochlan, M’Kinley, and Bowdyn Dufour; Emeri, Nixen, Maddox, Asher, and Islah Simonar; Meryck and Berk Batty; his brother, Gerald Batty; his sisters-in-law, Diane Harris and Sharon Prystupa; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
He is predeceased by his dad, John Oliver Batty; his parents-in-law, Fred and Olive Prystupa; his sister-in-law, Donna Batty; his brothers-in-law, Mervin Prystupa, Bernie Prystupa, and Gordon Harris; his nephews, Bret and Wayne Prystupa; his niece, Danni Jean Harris; his grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles.
John’s family would like to thank the staff at Herb Bassett Home in Prince Albert for the exceptional care he received during the last year of his life.
There will be a private family graveside for John.
A celebration of John’s life will take place at the Leask Community Hall in Leask, SK on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at 3:00 PM.
