John "Jack" Baynes

John “Jack” Baynes was born in Battleford, SK to James and Clara Baynes. He spent the first years of his life on the homestead near Leoville until 1934 when the family moved by Model A Ford to Cowhichan Station, BC on Vancouver Island. They spent the next 5 years on the island due to his father’s health. They returned to Saskatchewan to what is the current farm yard in 1939. He attended school until grade 11 while also working on the farm before and after school. In his early 20’s, he then spent a few years working in southern Saskatchewan and in British Columbia. He returned to the farm to look after his parents. On November 20, 1971, he married the love of his life Mary. They had three children – Phyllis, Edith and Jonathan (Melanie). Eventually two grandchildren, Mina and Emmett, were born. Jack lived on the farm until November 2023 when he moved to Rose Gill Lodge in Rabbit Lake, SK. At the age of 97yrs.
Jack accepted Christ as his personal Saviour in his twenties. He was involved in his church teaching Sunday School, singing/ leading worship, being the Sunday School Superintendent, being a member of the church board and occasionally filling in for the pastor when he was away. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, going for walks, working in the garden and watching the birds and wild animals.
He passed away on March 1, 2024 in North Battleford. He was predeceased by his wife Mary, his brothers – Clifton (Louise), Frank (Kay), Bill (Doreen) & Richard, his sister Betty (Elvin). He is survived by his sister-in-law Emma, his children Phyllis, Edith and Jonathan (Melanie) and his grandchildren Mina and Emmett.
The Funeral Service will be held on Friday March 8 at 3:00pm at Lakeland Community Church, Spiritwood, SK with a luncheon to follow at the Pioneer Center, Spiritwood, SK. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Gideon’s and Rose Gill Lodge, Rabbit Lake, SK.
