John Dunn

John Herbert William Dunn, age 89, of Kinistino, Saskatchewan, died peacefully on the 26th of January, 2014, with his loving family at his side.
John was born in 1924 in Broadview, Saskatchewan, to Gertrude and William Dunn, the third of four children (Brenda, Margaret & Dorothy). In 1942, his high school education in Broadview was interrupted by the war, when he joined the Navy. After his 1946 discharge, he finished high school, in Broadview, and then attended Normal School in Moose Jaw in 1949. In 1966, he completed his Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Saskatchewan, majoring in music and drama.
John started teaching in 1950, first at the country school of Stoney Brook, then Wapella and then Tisdale, Saskatchewan. In 1956 he arrived by train in Kinistino, Saskatchewan with his new bride Sylvia, who he married in Walkerton, Ontario. John continued teaching in Kinistino until his retirement in 1982.
John was active in the community as a Legion member, Kinsmen member, high school band instructor and long-time organist at the United Church.
John is survived by his wife Sylvia Dunn; his children, David Dunn (Cec), Kathleen Poier (Brian), Steven Dunn (Janice), foster son Darwin Papaquash; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren; and sisters Brenda and Dorothy.
He was predeceased by his Father, Mother, his oldest son Peter (Lori), and his sister Margaret.
Funeral service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church Kinistino, SK on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Gladys Court officiating.
Memorial contributions, in memory of John, may be directed to Mission In Service (United Church of Canada) and/or Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
