John Arthur Degerness
(June 11, 1927 – December 26, 2011)
John was born to Hank and Anne Degerness on the family farm near Fairy Glen, SK on June 11, 1927. John passed away with family at his side at Melfort, SK on December 26, 2011 at the age of 84 years. John met the love of his life Lillian “Lil” at a dance. The two of them danced at their own wedding on July 2, 1947, and continued to be dance partners for the next 64 years. John and Lil went on to have a large family of their own, 7 daughters and 3 sons.
John was a skilled handy-man who turned houses into homes. He was the original “Flip this House” man. Dad was a family man that truly cherished his family. John was a quiet, content person. He led a simple, uncomplicated life, and was such a fine example of a gentleman; but John also had a fine sense of humour and loved to tease more often than not.
John was a truck driver, carpenter, and musician. He played the accordion, guitar and violin “by ear”. Dad would sit with the violin on his shoulder; eyes closed and would softly whistle as he played. Dad was forever whistling! Whether it was while he was doing carpentry work, yard work, or out fishing, which Dad enjoyed so much. Dad liked to share stories from growing up on the farm, especially the northern lights story.
John is survived by his lifelong love Lillian “Lil” and 10 children John (Sandra), Rossyln (Len) Millar, Karen (Keith) McHarg, Donna (Daryl) Wilkison, Verly (Norm) Breadner, Keith, Louise (Randy) Drew, Arlee (Doug) Scott, Leon (Chris), Joanne (Wayne) Pederson ; 20 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren; and brothers Harvey and Alfred (Ella) Degerness.
A Memorial Service was held from FEDUSIAK FUNERAL CHAPEL on December 29th, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with Major Mike Hoeft officiating. Tributes were given by Len Millar and Richard Wicks. Music Ministry was provided by Fred Funk, Major Mike Hoeft, Major Lee Ann Hoeft, and Edie Wicks.
