MATHER, John A – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John A Mather (Jack) on the morning of Jan 4,2012. Jack died in Victoria B.C. after living in Kinistino, Saskatchewan for the past 72 years. He was predeceased by his parents, T.W.J. and Margaret Mather, wife Mary, sisters Marjorie Burwell and Jean Acker. He is survived by sisters Issey Campbell and Marie Petterson, sons John and Bill Mather. His immediate family consist of daughter-in-laws Theresa Mather and Vicky Mather, grandsons Andrew, Scott and James Mather, Dustin and Craig Lyle, granddaughter Shannon Mather. Jack graduated from pharmacy in 1935 from the University of Saskatchewan. He married Mary Alcorn, a school teacher from his hometown of Asquith Saskatchewan in 1938. They moved the same year to Kinistino with the purchase of the drug store from the late Vern Jansen. During the years in Kinistino Jack became active in civic and local affairs. He was secretary of the Board of Trade for a number of years, also serving a year as President. He was on the executive and president of the curling club, serving on the town council, and for some years on the United Church board. He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge of Kinistino and a member of the Shriners of Saskatchewan. Jack was a charter member of the Eastern Star chapter of Kinistino, a member of the Hospital Board and a charter member of the Kinsman club of Kinistino. Jack sold his drug store in 1977 to Ron Elder, he continued to maintain his pharmacy license and did some relief work in the summer months. At one time he was the oldest practising pharmacist in Saskatchewan. Jack and Mary did a considerable amount of travelling in Canada, Great Britain and Europe after his retirement. IN 1979 they built a home in Southland Village, an adult development in Mesa Arizona. Jack spend his winter months there for the next 31 years. Jack's wife Mary passed away in Kinistino in 1988. He continued to be active in his later years, fishing, gardening and travelling. He spent considerable time in Edmonton Alberta enjoying time with his family and grand children. Jack's remains will return to Kinistino where his heart never left.
