Jean Baptiste “John” Aubin was born on Friday, June 24, 1932, at home in the St. Brieux area, and he passed away peacefully in Shellbrook on Sunday, December 1, 2019.
Dad was born to Noah and Eva Aubin, the sixteenth child in a family of nineteen children. He attended several schools in the district, starting at Lacombe School, next St. Brieux School and lastly Brushwood School.
At the age of fourteen John started working where needed at various jobs at nearby farms. When he was sixteen, he started full-time work as a farmhand in the Middle Lake area. While working at this farm he met his future wife, Grace (Martinka), when she started working for the same employer. John and Grace were married July 14, 1953. He and his family lived temporarily at different places in the St. Brieux and Middle Lake areas. In 1959, the family’s permanent residence became a farm in the St. Benedict area which was formerly owned by Grace’s parents. From 1963, John worked at part-time jobs to supplement the family’s income from the small farm. Some of these jobs included snow plow operator, mechanic, and farm laborer for local farmers. For part of 1967 And 1968 he worked at a potash mine at Colonsay, Saskatchewan. Early fall of 1971 John moved the family to Prince Albert after getting full-time employment as the custodian at Composite High School. He still farmed part time until 1972 at which time the farm was sold.
John retired in 1993 from his custodial duties. For many years John kept busy with handyman chores, like small plumbing or carpentry work all the way to major home renovations for family and friends. Over the years, John enjoyed various hobbies and activities. He enjoyed bowling and won many trophies. He enjoyed playing bingo. He loved music, dancing, and the sound of the fiddle, which he developed a special fondness for having grown up listening to his father play. In the summer, he would go fishing and had a few good blueberry picking sites and in the winter, he loved to go ice fishing.
He was a wonderful caring, sharing man and was always willing to help anyone with a project. He had the mind of an engineer and was the most clever person when it came solving problems in a unique, innovative way. He enjoyed spending time tinkering in his garage and would always come up with interesting new creations to delight and amaze us. He loved all of us, was loved by all and will be sadly missed.
