Mom was born in Blaine Lake, Sk. to Peter and Mary Kulick, the eldest of 2 girls. She loved life on the family farm near Tallman and ended up becoming the ‘son’ her dad didn’t have, often helping with chores and even learning to drive the old tractor. Her favorite place was in the barn playing with the kittens or training her dog Pal.
She attended a one-room country school and then Blaine Lake High School. She loved the openness of the prairie. She and her sister spent many evenings on the roof of their hilltop house where they could see every farm in the area. She fondly remembers learning many things about gardening and preserving food from her mom and Baba.
When mom was 12, she heard a Bible lecture that touched her heart, and at the early age of 13, she dedicated herself to doing the will of her Creator, Jehovah (Psalm 83:18). She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Saskatoon. She lived up to her decision, living her entire life the way God would want her to. This moved her to be generous, hospitable, and kind and to regularly share with others her Bible-based hope for the future, even with staff and roommates at the hospital during her final weeks.
After graduation, mom moved to Prince Albert, where she later met Arne. They both knew from the moment they met that they belonged together! They were married on November 14,1964, and settled in Big River. It took some time for this prairie girl to get used to her new environment. She used to say that the TREES seemed to get in the way of EVERYTHING!!!
They soon welcomed their first 2 sons, and mom learned that her new favorite thing was bringing a new baby home from the hospital!! They bought a house on a well-treed quarter. Dad cleared some trees, and mom planted her garden and flowers, and they made it their lifetime home. They continued expanding their family, welcoming 3 more babies! She grew to love her northern life and all the friends she made there.
Mom took care of dad lovingly and loyally until dad passed away in 2019. Although losing Dad and leaving her beloved home was the most difficult challenge she had ever faced, she made the most of it, making new friends wherever she went and experiencing new things. Even spending a winter in Mazatlan with Glenda and Tom! Eating tacos and shrimp!!
Finally, mom settled into a beautiful apartment down the hall from Heidi and her family. They enjoyed lots of time together shopping, going for pedicures, talking and watching mom’s favorite shows!!
Mom was so talented! She was good at anything she attempted, cooking, baking, canning, gardening, sewing, fishing, and fileting her catch!! She made doughnuts for many of our regular ballgames and provided generously for all our gatherings. Her crocheted afghans and knitted sweaters as well as slippers, mitts, and toques have warmed many people and their hearts.
Mom will be lovingly remembered by her 5 children: Darryl (Kella); Darwin (Tyla); Glenda (Tom) Popowich; Derek (Nicolette); Heidi (Jeremy) Cobb, 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild and her sister Lily Eveleigh. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Arnold Fonos and her parents, Peter and Mary Kulick.
