Jim was born on May 30th, 1922, in Sturgeon Valley, Sask. He moved with his parents to the family homestead in 1933. He served in the Armed Forces with the South Saskatchewan regiment. Jim met Helen briefly in the early 1940’s and they later married on December 21st, 1946. They raised their family on the same homestead where Jim himself was raised. Jim & Helen moved into their family home in 1953; they farmed & ranched and, Jim had numerous off farm jobs as well, including school bus driver for many years.
Before his retirement, he managed the local community pasture for 21 years. Over the years his horses gradually became more important and they started raising registered Quarter Horses. It was during these times that they made many new friends – most of whom they have stayed in touch with over the years. When it was decided that the horses were getting to be too much, everyone found it very hard to load this legacy of their life into a trailer and be taken away. However this legacy lived on through his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Jim loved to fish, hunt, and snowmobile and spent the remainder of his summers at Hackett Lake. Jim was a proud man and was able to live by himself with little help right up till his last days and already had his camper set up at the lake to spend his summer up at his second home.
The eulogists were his grandchildren – Amanda, Brandy and Jason. Grandchildren and great grandchildren performed an emotional tribute for their Grampa. Larry Panter was the urn bearer. Jim’s ashes were buried on the family farm alongside of his wife Helen right where the eagle flies and the rainbow ends.
Beau “Lac” Funeral Home was entrusted with the funeral arrangements which was held on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Big River Community Centre. Email condolenances may be sent to beau.lac@sasktel.net and will be forwarded to the family.
