James Herbert Broadfoot
March 29, 1923 – July 22, 2014
With the sun shining on his face, James Herbert Broadfoot was welcomed into his Heavenly home on July 22, 2014 at the age of 91 years. Herb was born in Davidson, SK in 1923 to Julia and John Broadfoot. After finishing school, he began working at the Co-op in Birch Hills. It was in Birch Hills that he met his sweetheart, Mary Archibald, and they were married in 1950. They were blessed with 3 children Johnny, Joanne and Wendy. His 43 year career with the Co-op took him to Naicam, Carrot River, Luseland and Asquith. Upon his retirement they moved back to Birch Hills. Herb lost the love of his life, Mary in 1992. He was so blessed to experience love again when he married Doris Lewis in 1995. With that marriage he gained another loving family whom he experienced many adventures, laughs and projects. Sadly he lost Doris in 2004. He continued to live in Birch Hills on his own until 3 years ago, when he went into Loewen Care Home in Prince Albert and then returned to Birch Hills last July, residing at the Birch View Home till his passing. A capable and principled man, Herb was devoted to family and dedicated to work. Generous of spirit, Herb volunteered for many groups no matter what community he was in. He was involved in the volunteer fire department, Town Council, Co-op Board, the United Church, meals on wheels and many more, offering countless hours of community minded spirit. A jack of all trades, gifted with patience, persistence and perfection, Herb enjoyed many hours in the garage working on numerous projects. Herb loved to camp and travel. He started out with tents, moving up to trailers and finally to his numerous motorhomes. With his family and friends they found adventure on the road in Canada and in the USA. Herb was a doer. Never idle, always tinkering or working on something. He was fiercely independent, quiet, reserved but always respectful and always a gentleman. He was very active throughout his life. He was still waterskiing at the age of 78 and curling at the age of 85. And he loved to dance and dance he did! He enjoyed square dancing, old time dancing with the old fashioned waltz being his favorite. And he always whistled when he danced. So now with his death, he is made whole, he has his voice back, and his dancing legs; so get your dancing shoes ready Mary, Doris, Donna and Ivy ‘cause here he comes to join you in his Heavenly Kingdom….. Herb is survived by his daughters: Joanne Dams (Stan) and Wendy Nystuen (Dean) and his grandchildren: Leanna, Brendon (Sheena, great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Mason), Kenton and Jaydon; Doris’ children: Linda (Don), Pat (Matt), Neil, and Judy Blanchard (Kevin) and their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Irene and his special brother-in-law Herman Krack and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Johnny in 1968, his first love, Mary, in 1992, his brother Gordon in 1993 and his second love, Doris, in 2004. A Funeral Service will be at the Birch Hills Lutheran Church on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made out to the Birchview Auxilliary, Box 578, Birch Hills, SK, S0J 0G0. Special thanks to Birch View staff for your personal care during this last year.
