1934 – 2014
Jack Burroughs passed away on July 27, 2014 in Saskatoon. He was born on April 29, 1934 in Edmonton, Alberta. After attending school he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served in many places including Arctic Canada and France. While in France he studied judo and earned his first degree black belt. Upon returning to Canada he spent time in Ontario. While there he spent some evenings as a masked villain in professional wrestling. He subsequently lived in Edmonton. He was an accomplished taxi driver and spent evenings as a bouncer in Edmonton clubs. In the 1970’s he completed a degree in education and started teaching in Saskatchewan. He taught at the James Smith Cree Nation, Humboldt, Cumberland House, Weyakwin and La Ronge. Jack met Josephine Brooks and they had many good years together in their trailer on the farm near Meath Park. They enjoyed time with their neighbours, especially Harry and Elsie Sass. Jack and Jo loved entertaining and dancing. They were so graceful on the dance floor. Jack was involved with judo in Saskatchewan from the 1970’s until the 1990’s. He gained his second degree black belt as a member of Judo Saskatchewan. He was the sensei of the Melfort club in the mid-1970’s. He helped instruct judoka at various places in Saskatchewan including St. Brieux and Prince Albert. He loved teaching judo. Jack was a man of strong opinions and ready to express them at any time. He enjoyed the challenges of chess and go. After he retired from teaching he spent just over 10 years living in Mexico in the vicinity of Lake Chapala and surrounding area villages, just southeast of Guadalajara, Mexico. True to his nature Jack was as forthright in Mexico as he had been in Canada and a quick departure was needed a couple of years ago. Jack spent his final years in care in Saskatoon. During his last years his good friend, Steve Sutherland, helped him a lot. Jack was a big man with a big heart. Jack lived life with passion. He was a character. Jack is survived by his son, Allen (Joanne) Olson and their family – Jeff (Melissa) Olson and Amelie, Theodore and Rogan – Alissa (Arlyn) Bjorn and Sophia and Lucy – Jordan Olson – Amy Jo (John) Lawley, and his daughter Clarisse Burroughs-Fromyhr and her daughters Gabrielle Fromyhr and Dominique Fromyhr as well as his siblings. He was predeceased by his parents Margaret Johns and Howard George Burroughs, Josephine and his great- granddaughter, Grace.
A memorial service will be held Monday, August 25, 2014 in the evening at 7:00 at the Royal Canadian Legion Lounge in Prince Albert at 133 – 8th Street East. Jack’s children will be coming to Saskatchewan for the service. Jack’s friends from around Saskatchewan are invited to come and remember Jack and share stories. There are a lot to share.
