Iris was born January 15, 1936 in Fenton, SK to Frank and Arlene George. She was the middle child of three and maintained a close relationship with her siblings Evelyn and Merle (deceased 2011). Her father died when she was 7, so her mother moved the family to Prince Albert to be close to her grandparents and other extended relatives.
Iris attended school, first at Queen Elizabeth, then PACI, followed by PA Business College. Iris had a variety of different jobs but spent most of her working life at Burns as an invoice typist and then as an assistant teacher for the PA Pulp Mill Pre-school.
Iris met the love of her life, Sam Smith when he became a border at their home. Sam and Iris have been married 63 years and they have 2 children, Kevin and Loretta. Iris and Sam’s favorite pastime was being with their extended families. Iris often spoke of how lucky she was to have her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren so close and to be so involved in their lives.
Iris especially enjoyed time at Candle Lake and if they didn’t have family with them, they usually were hosting events with friends. Iris and Sam travelled extensively within Canada and the States including Hawaii. They also travelled to Bermuda, Mexico, Spain and Rome.
When at home Iris and Sam enjoyed playing cards with neighbours and longtime friends or sharing over coffees at McDonalds.
Iris’ health has been failing for the past 10 years and she had experienced many hospitalizations. Her struggle finally ended on February 8 with Sam by her side. She will be heartfully missed.
Iris is survived by her husband Sam; daughter Loretta; son Kevin; sister Evelyn (Frank); sister-in-law Eleanor (Merle); grandchildren Sheldon (Patrizia) and Charmaine (Tim); great-grandchildren Madison (Devon), Macayle, Emily, Sam, and Kristian (Rachel); as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended family; and her special friends Hazel, Bob and Evelyn, John and Shaunah.
A Private Family Service will be held.
