Irene Mary {Sollom} Edwards of Prince Albert passed away peacefully at Rose Garden Hospice on Friday April 5, 2024, at the age of 96. Irene was predeceased by Peter her husband of 73 years in September 2020. She was also predeceased by her only sibling, Edwin, in 2014.
Irene is survived by her 5 children: Trudy {Bob} Migneault, Bob Edwards, Tammy {Bill} Hrycuik, Raymond {Leslie} Edwards, and Jim {Celynne} Edwards.
She is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Heidi, Melanie, Amber, Trenton, Tye, Sydney, Donovan, Sheridan and Owen and 6 great-grandchildren: Tanner, Remy, Saisha, Ave, Finn and Lincoln.
When someone dies, we often say what a wonderful person they were, just to be polite. Not with Irene. She was kind, gentle, and loving. She never had an unkind word to say about anyone. She was often stopped by a former student she had taught in kindergarten 55 plus years ago, just to say Hi! and remind her who they were.
Irene was born on August 28th, 1927, in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan to Theodore and Anna Sollom. Irene was raised on a farm near Hagen, and in Birch Hills. She had a strict Norwegian Lutheran upbringing. Her father died when she was very young, and she was raised by her mother. She was not a stranger to hard work.
Irene moved to Saskatoon when she was 17 years old and attended “Normal School”, which is the equivalent to teacher’s college. She taught in many one room schools and covered grades 1 thru 12. It is while Irene was teaching at one such school in Fairholme that she met her future husband, Peter.
Irene loved children! Her and Peter became foster parents soon after they were married and continued for over 25 years. She believed in proper etiquette and being kind to others and she led by example. She instilled this in her children and her grandchildren.
Irene enjoyed travelling and her highlight trip was Hawaii. She also made many trips to visit Trudy and her family in Alaska.
Irene loved playing Bingo. Luckily, Points West which she called home for the last 8 years had Bingo every Tuesdays and Saturday. Irene loved her family unconditionally and enjoyed cooking their favorite meal whenever they came for a visit.
Mom was generous to many charities that she supported.
We would like to thank all the remarkable staff at Points West, Prince Albert Home Care, Victoria Hospital, and Rose Garden Hospice for the exceptional care they provided for Irene.
In lieu of other tributes please consider donating to Victoria Hospital or Rose Garden Hospice.
