Irene Gertrude Hotvedt
Oct. 1921 – Nov. 2013
Irene was born to William and Rose Boyer on October 1, 1921, she was the third oldest of eight children. She went to work at an early age to help support her family. Irene joined the Air Force in her mid- twenties, served her country proudly for 5 years and was honorable discharged for a disability.
Irene met Harold Richard Hotvedt and they were married in April 1949, which began their 62 year journey together. They raised a family of three children; Sandra, Rhonda and Ivel. One of the fondest memories Irene leaves with her children and grandchildren is of Music. Both Irene and Richard played music, but Irene played a six sided harmonica, that no family has seen since. Irene won several contests with that harmonica and never travelled without it. Many a social, anniversary get together, wedding and family reunion had Irene front and center providing the entertainment with Richard as her back up.
Irene’s determination and drive gave her the ability to teach herself how to create remarkable clothing by knitting, sewing and crocheting. She baked, canned, gardened, worked as a matron in the Maidstone Lodge, fostered children, raised farm animals, worked on highway paving crew and a whole lot more.
A Funeral Service was held Saturday, November 9th, 2013 from the Lion’s Community Hall in Shell Lake, Saskatchewan, Officiated by Reverend David Jensen. The Eulogy was given by Yvonne Zimmer-Loeffer and Cynthia McLeod. Following the service, Irene was laid to rest beside her beloved husband in the Shell Lake Cemetery.
