Hunter Christian Nelson left us Sunday, July 30, 2017 at home in Weldon, suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 16. Hunter was born December 21st, 2000 in Saskatoon, SK to Cory and Carmen Nelson. The family spent the first 2 years of Hunter’s life in Saskatoon before moving to an acreage near Weldon, SK. Hunter was the only boy amongst his big sisters Danielle and Brooke, and little sister Emma who was born when he was 4. He was an incredibly happy baby, always smiling with his big brown eyes and dimples. When he was 4 months old he was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition, and had major surgery at 5 months, but despite all that he still smiled all the time. He recovered and was extremely energetic and active, he didn’t start walking, he skipped right to running at 10 months old. Hunter attended pre-K in Kinistino, and went on to attend kindergarten through grade 10 at Kinistino School. He was such an active boy and loved sports. He started playing hockey at age 6 and continued to play to the end of this past season, as well as refereeing minor hockey games for many years. He also played volleyball and basketball on the school teams, and spent a lot of time just shooting hoops at home in the yard. Hunter loved golfing, he had a membership at the Birch Hills Golf Course and would sometimes go for a round by himself after school because he just wanted to golf. He played baseball, slo-pitch and ball hockey for several years. He represented Team Sask on the provincial ball hockey team and went to Edmonton this past summer for the Western Challenge Cup, which included teams from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. Hunter had such a great sense of humour and loved to make people laugh. He could say the smallest thing, but in his special way he could make it be so funny. Making faces, doing a silly dance, using a funny voice, that was Hunter. He had a huge heart, and many friends that he would do anything for. He leaves behind his parents Cory and Carmen; sister Danielle and her boyfriend Theron, who Hunter considered his brother; sister Brooke, and little sister Emma; grandparents Doug and Frances Nelson, uncle Jason (Renee) Nelson and cousins Shyanne and Kady; grandparents Mark and Dale Olsen, aunt Carla Olsen (Donovan Gobeil), aunt Laura Olsen, and uncle Eric Olsen; great grandfather George Nelson and many great-uncles, great-aunts and cousins, and close friend and cousin Cody; all his many friends, classmates and teammates. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made in Hunter’s memory to KidSport Saskatchewan 1870 Lorne Street Regina, SK, S4P 2L7 or online at www.kidsportcanada.ca/saskatchewan. A funeral Service will be held Friday, August 4 at 2:00 pm at the Weldon Auditorium, Weldon SK.Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, (306-922-4729).
