It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hugh Otterson on July 18, 2026, at the age of 67. He passed away surrounded by the love of his family.
Hugh was a devoted husband to Wendy, a loving father to Brady (wife Veronica and son Marcel) and Scott (wife Jennifer). He was immensely proud to become a grandfather and had eagerly been looking forward to meeting his future granddaughter. He was a caring brother, uncle, cousin, and friend whose kindness, quiet strength, and generosity touched many lives.
Hugh was born on February 4, 1959, in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, and spent much of his life serving as a rural municipality administrator. He valued hard work, honesty, family, and helping others. He was deeply committed to giving back to his community, always supporting local fundraisers by buying 50/50 tickets, proudly collecting more than 15 TeleMiracle bears over the years, and working tirelessly to help the Canwood and District Bus Association secure a new bus and storage shed.
In recent months, Hugh faced his illness with remarkable courage and dignity. He fought with everything he had and never lost his determination or spirit. Throughout his journey, he was surrounded by the unwavering love of his family and friends, as well as the compassionate care of many healthcare professionals. Our family would especially like to thank the incredible staff in the palliative care unit at St. Paul’s Hospital. Their kindness, compassion, and exceptional care brought us comfort, and for the first time in months, we truly felt that Dad was in the best possible hands.
Hugh is survived by his wife Wendy Otterson; son Scott (Jennifer) Otterson; son Brady (Veronica) Otterson and grandson Marcel; siblings Amund Otterson, Shirley (George) Snead, Jean Weild, Rita (Dale) Suderman, and Earl (Roxanne) Otterson; sisters-in-law Linda Mason and Sharon Korody (Ralph); brother-in-law Keith Mason (Pauline); and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Elmer Otterson; brother Murray Otterson; brother-in-law Greg Weild; sister-in-law Terry Otterson; niece Myranda Weild; and parents-in-law Gladys and William Mason.
In keeping with Hugh’s wishes, a private family service will be held.
Those wishing to honour Hugh’s memory may make a donation to the Canwood and District Bus Association (Box 130 Canwood, SK S0J 0K0) or the Shellbrook and District Health Services Foundation (Box 33 Shellbrook, SK S0J 2E0).
Although our hearts are broken, we take comfort in the memories Hugh gave us, the values he lived by, and the love he shared so freely. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts.
