Hilda Mary Brown (nee Southall) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 29, 1914. After a three week battle with failing health, she passed away peacefully in sleep March 20, 2011 in Prince Albert. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert “Bert” Henry Brown “Brownie”; son Edward Blake Brown; granddaughter Hillory Rhian Brown and her brother and sisters. Hilda is survived by her children Lynne (Jim) Baxter, Ken Brown (Bob Brews) and Pat (Chris) Selinger; daughters-in-law Darlene Brown and Shirl Brown; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sister Doreen Gracey and numerous relatives and friends. As a young woman Hilda worked in downtown Winnipeg until she married “Brownie” on March 4, 1939. By the summer of 1940 she was a young mom hand-washing diapers on a scrub board in God's Lake, Manitoba. For the next 10 years she raised their first three children and cared for Dad in various remote communities in Northern Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In 1951, they moved to La Ronge where Pat was born and Hilda spent 12 years as an active community member, mother, wife and beginning her way back into being a career woman. Shortly after their move to Prince Albert in 1963, she became the bookkeeper for the Prince Albert Community Clinic, where she worked until 1979. During her last 4 years of work Hilda and Brownie spent the winter months in Florida renewing old friendships. In retirement Hilda spent many summers at their cottage at Emma Lake and travelled to spend time with their children and grandchildren across Western Canada. She had an uncanny ability to remember and endear herself to not only her children and grandchildren but also all the young friends they brought into her life; she was able to greet dozens of the next two generations of young people by name and reminisce about them up to her death. Under a determined and confident exterior was a compassionate and caring soul who opposed injustice and defended and supported those in need. She will be long remembered and loved by her legacy of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all who knew her and had been touched by her strength of character. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Calvary United Church, 114 – 25th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Reverend Nora Vedress officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to a Charity of the Donor’s Choice. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray's Funeral Chapel, Drew Gray, Funeral Director.
