With loving memories, we announce the passing of Henry Mathers, age 90, of Prince Albert, SK, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 8, 1935, in Alingly, SK, Henry was the eldest son of Harry and Stella Mathers and carried the values of hard work, kindness, and family throughout his life.
While attending a Nordale teen dance Henry saw the love of his life, Darlene Dean from across the room and proclaimed, “THAT is the girl I’m going to marry”. During their 70 years together, they grew their family to include a son, Randy (Michele) their family Christie; (Henry’s precious great grandchildren, Deklan, Madelyn and Keegan) and Michael, daughter, Carrie (Jim) and family Joseph (Fernanda) and Jason (Cheryl and daughter Kira) daughter, Sandra (Darren).
Henry dedicated an incredible 50 years to the Prince Albert Daily Herald, where he worked as Pressroom Foreman overseeing the transition from hot lead to web offset printing, with the installation of an updated 8-unit Goss Community Press. Known for his strong work ethic, steady leadership, and quick sense of humor, he earned the respect and friendship of many coworkers over the decades as well as, serving as President of the Herald Social Club. He took great pride in his work and in being part of a profession that kept the community informed and connected.
Henry was rarely idle. He was a talented craftsman, and he built countless knick knack shelves through his hobby and small craft business, Handy Hanks Knick Knack Shelves. Many family members and friends proudly display one of Henry’s creations in their homes, each made with care, patience, and attention to detail. Henry was more than capable of home construction, renovations, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanics and always finding something to tinker with including his ‘51 Pontiac.
Henry found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved hockey, golfing, football, bowling, skiing, camping, fishing, CB radio, BBQing, cooking the best pancakes ever and spending time with his family whenever he could. He was an avid coin collector and maintained a lifelong fascination with space travel, always eager to talk about the latest discoveries among the stars. Whether sharing stories around a campsite, casting a fishing line, watching western movies, listening to music or offering advice with a smile, Henry had a way of making people feel welcome and valued.
Above all else, Henry was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud family man. He was a role model and inspiration to all his children and grandchildren. He was dependable, generous, patient, and full of quiet wisdom. His family will forever remember his gentle nature, his steady presence, and the love he gave so freely.
