Heather Bassett
1939 ~ 2024
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend, Shirley Heather Ann Bassett. Heather passed peacefully surrounded by family on July 11, 2024, at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. She is predeceased by her beloved parents, Ralph and May (Henderson) Bassett; her brother-in-law, Dixon Adamson; and her former spouses, George Hosie and Jim Nishikawa. As well as her much beloved animal companions, Ollie, Jack and Jill. She is survived by her children, David, Jonathan (Melanie), Jennifer and Paul (Stacey) Nishikawa; her grandchildren, Ivy, Gabriel, Rayden, Logan and Nicholas; her siblings, Mona Adamson, Jean (Larry) and Jamie (Catherine) Bassett; and her devoted feline companion, Esme.
She was born in Prince Albert on August 28, 1939, into a very close, very loving family. She married and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she raised four children. She did social work at the Manitoba Youth Center, where she built many deep and lasting bonds with the children in her care and her co-workers. An entrepreneurial spirit, she moved on to open the King’s Head Pub and the Toad in the Hole. Everyone who came through the door was considered family.
Mom was the most beautiful woman, an absolutely vibrant human being. Indomitable, loving, compassionate, strong, courageous, generous of spirit and heart. She loved to travel, to read, to cook, to bake, to garden, she sewed, did pottery, macramé, made jewellery, she loved to play cribbage and loved her bridge parties. She was a devoted Coronation Street fan. She loved animals and always leant her heart to strays who needed a loving home. Mom loved music. It was one of her great pleasures to host the Dust Rhinos and Big Dave Mclean at her pub, and to see her son David, an accomplished folk and blues musician, perform. Singing at the pub with friends was one of her greatest joys. Mom has blessed us all with memories of joy, love and laughter.
Thank you to all the family and friends that provided friendship and support over the last few years. She appreciated all of you very much.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Victoria Hospital for their care and compassion in Mom’s final days.
