MRS. GWENDOLYN HILBORN
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gwendolyn Ceclia Hilborn, age 86. Gwen passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. She was born March 5, 1927 to Gertrude McKinnon and Orland Head. She was the eldest, with five brothers and seven sisters. Gwen married Ralph Hilborn on January 14, 1942, and their only child Shirley May Ross was born on May 20, 1942. Gwen and her family resided on many farms in Southern Saskatchewan where she cooked for ranch hands. They moved to Cochrane, AB, to work on a sheep ranch, then to a ranch in Cloverdale, BC, and then back to Prince Albert where Gwen worked at Fred and Lena Goodfellow’s bakery. Gwen eventually moved to Vancouver where she lived for 15 years, finding employment at Golf’s Bakery. When her only grandchild Heather Porter (nee Ross) was born, Gwen moved back to Prince Albert and worked at the Marlboro Inn for about 25 years. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling, baking, entertaining and a good game of cards. Gwen met her companion Ernie Chlysta and they later moved to Cudworth, where they lived for ten years before moving to the Columbian Centre. Gwen was able to fulfill her dream to go to Hawaii in 1996. In May 2012, she moved to Mont St. Joseph Home. In September 2012, Gwen’s only great-grandchild Presley Elizabeth Maui Porter was born. Presley was the apple of Nana’s eye. Gwen is survived by her daughter Shirley Ross; her granddaughter Heather Porter (Joseph); her great-granddaughter Presley Porter; her brothers Gayle (Sharon) Head and Daryl McKinnon; her sisters Donna (Bill) Knihnicki, Linda (James) Drake, Jean (Murray) Welder, Lynn (Roger) Furi, Irene (Stan) Prokopetz and Lorna (Gill) Pedigrew; her numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Gertrude McKinnon and Orland Head; her brother Garnet McKinnon; her husband Ralph Hilborn; her companion Ernie Chlysta; her son-in-law Allister Ross. Gwen will forever be remembered for her humour and kind heart. Donations in Gwen’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 24 from St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 60 – 12 Street East, Reverend Dr. Sandy Scott officiating. Interment will take place at the Garden of Christus, Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of River Park Memorial Chapel, Prince Albert, 306 764-2727, Don Moriarty, Funeral Director.
