Gordon Roy Groat was born on September 17th, 1927 and passed away on January 10th, 2015 at the Parkland Nursing Home, of which he was a resident for the past six years.
Gordon spent the majority of his working life on the farm until 1972, and then relocated to Melfort where he was employed at the golf course and curling club. From there they moved to Watrous and he worked at the golf course there as well. After retiring they moved to Saskatoon and due to ailing health he spent time in Sunnyside Nursing Home then later was moved to Parkland.
Gordon spent one summer with his parents in BC and this is where he met the love of his life. They knew each other for two weeks, got engaged and the following year they were married. That marriage lasted sixty six plus years.
During his time on the farm at Ethelton he was very active in the community, from playing in a band for dances, serving on the board of elders at the church, curling at the local rink, coaching hockey teams, refereeing games and of course the odd game of golf.
He will truly be missed by his wife of 66 years, June, his children, Judy (Ken) Sundelin, Linda (John) Mcdonald, Wendy (Jim) Zaparaniuk, Les Groat, David Groat and Sandy Hamel. Also by his sisters Velma Campbell and Phyllis Ford, Brother Edward (Jean) Groat. In addition, 16 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father and mother, Roy and Marjorie Groat, Brother Clark, Sister Effie Hindley, and infant daughter Marjorie Ruth.
