Gordon John Walz
1941 – 2013
It is with both joy and sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon John Walz. Gordon met the Lord on the morning of November 30th, 2013 after a 21 year struggle with terminal bone marrow cancer and a brain injury he incurred as a result. His loving wife of 51 years was at his side. Gordon had a full life both personally and professionally. He was born on June 16, 1941 in Macklin Saskatchewan, he married, the love of his life, Anna Keller on March 3, 1962. Together they had five children. Gordon graduated from teacher's college in 1961. He started his career in northern Saskatchewan and often said how much fun those first few years in the north were. It was there that he and Anna had their 5 children. The family moved south in 1972 and after a few short stays in various communities, settled in Spiritwood, Sask. Gordon was principal of the local catholic school for a number of years then took a break from teaching and dabbled in banking and private business. Gordon and Anna next moved to Yellowknife NWT in 1982 where he became school a Catholic School Principal once again. In 1993 Gordon's professional life ended when he was diagnosed with cancer. Life changed drastically at this time and a long journey of illness began. The couple returned to Spiritwood to retire in 2001. In 2002 Gordon and Anna tragically lost their daughter, Vawn. Throughout the hardships Gordon remained as positive and active as possible. He enjoyed his grandchildren and never stopped trying to find ways to live life to the fullest.
Gordon loved teaching and learning, he played guitar and was fascinated by the computer revolution. He was a very professional man; he loved electronics and could fix anything. Anna always proudly said that she never had a repairman in her house until Gordon got sick. In his final years genealogy became a favorite hobby. He created many personal calendars, photo albums, family trees, and timelines, leaving his children with a strong sense of heritage for them to pass down to their children.
Prayer Services for Gordon will be held on Tuesday the 3rd of December at 7:00pm and the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday the 4th of December at 11:00am, both being held from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Spiritwood, SK with Father Dong Doan officiating.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Rivier Elementary School or a charity of personal choice.
